Artificial intelligence (AI) startup Anthropic is reportedly finalising a funding round that could raise an additional $2 billion, pushing its valuation to an estimated $60 billion.
The deal, led by venture capital firm Lightspeed Venture Partners, will boost Anthropic’s financial standing after a previous valuation of $18 billion in 2023.
Anthropic has since grown fast to meet up with the competition in the generative AI space. Its flagship AI product, Claude, is commended among enterprises for its capabilities in customer service, sales, and marketing applications.
Recent innovations, such as the introduction of Claude Enterprise, further make Anthropic more disruptive in providing advanced AI solutions for businesses.
Anthropic’s innovation has attracted investments from some of the world’s biggest technology firms. Amazon recently increased its stake in the company, committing $4 billion in convertible notes.
This follows the e-commerce giant’s earlier $4 billion investment, which brings its total stake to $8 billion. Nonetheless, Amazon remains a minority investor without a seat on Anthropic’s board.
Google has also been a part of Anthropic’s growth, injecting $2 billion into the startup in 2023. This partnership established a strategic cloud collaboration between the two companies.
In October 2024, Anthropic unveiled a new feature allowing its AI models to perform complex tasks on computers, such as navigating websites and executing multi-step operations. According to Jared Kaplan, Anthropic’s chief science officer, the innovation enables AI systems to mimic human computer use with remarkable efficiency.
With the surge in funding for Anthropic, companies like OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google are vying for market share, but startups like Anthropic are leveraging investments to carve out their own niche.
Industry analysts project the generative AI sector could generate over $1 trillion in revenue within the next decade, highlighting the high stakes involved.
According to PitchBook data, U.S.-based AI startups accounted for nearly half of all venture capital funding in 2024, with $97 billion poured into the sector. This surge reiterates the huge potential of AI technology, even as overall venture capital fundraising has seen a decline.
