Showmax has released the trailer for the second season of its Nigerian Original epic drama series, Cheta M. The new season premieres on Monday, 6 January 2025 with three new episodes released every week.

This epic tale follows the star-crossed love story of Adanna (Oluchi Amajuoyi) and Nnanna (Kingsley Nwachukwu), whose bond is tested amid the escalating conflict between the kingdoms of Mgberi, led by the tyrannical King Jideofor (Kalu Ikeagwu), and Ajaani, ruled by the cunning patriarch Nze Ezeugo (Nonso Odogwu).

Their love faces formidable opposition from Ojigijaga (Jsmile Uhuru), the enigmatic spiritual shaman of Mgberi, and a web of envy, desire, and political scheming by those around them.

Season 1 ended on a dramatic note as Adanna and Nwoye’s (Nnamdi Agbo) wedding faced a series of shocking interruptions, from uninvited guests to Chidalu’s (Celia Okechukwu) brazen attempt to hijack the ceremony that led to her death.

  • Netflix Denies Exit from Nigeria, Reaffirms Focus on Local Content Despite Cancelled Projects

Netflix Denies Exit from Nigeria, Reaffirms Focus on Local Content Despite Cancelled Projects

Netflix has refuted reports of an impending exit from Nigeria, asserting its continued focus on the country’s growing film industry and creative sector.

This affirmation follows remarks by Nigerian filmmaker Kunle Afolayan at the 2024 Zuma International Film Festival, which led to talks about the streaming giant’s exit from the region.

Afolayan disclosed that several film projects commissioned by Netflix had been cancelled, despite the success of earlier collaborations. He said, “Three years ago, signing a three-film deal with Netflix was a significant milestone. While these films performed remarkably well globally, it appears their returns in Nigeria did not meet expectations.” However, Afolayan did not directly state that Netflix was withdrawing from Nigeria.

Adding to the speculation, some observers pointed to Amazon Prime Video’s retreat from Nigeria in January 2024, after a high-profile launch and investment in local content.

Even with these comparisons, Netflix has categorically denied any plans to leave the Nigerian market. In a statement issued on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the platform emphasised, “We are not exiting Nigeria. We remain committed to investing in Nigerian stories and delighting our audience.”

Netflix’s journey in Nigeria began in 2016 with the licensing of notable local productions. Over the years, it has invested over $23 million in the country’s film industry, supporting more than 250 projects, including licensed titles, co-productions, and original commissions.

Commendable successes include Lionheart, The Wedding Party 2, and King of Boys. In 2020, Netflix expanded its footprint by signing multi-title deals with industry heavyweights such as Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Productions and Kunle Afolayan’s Golden Effects Pictures.

Nonetheless, Netflix faces challenges in Nigeria’s competitive streaming sector. With a monthly subscription cost of ₦7,000 ($4), the platform is perceived as a luxury service, especially in a country grappling with inflation and currency devaluation.

Local competitors like Showmax, known for its affordability, dominate the market, leaving Netflix with a smaller share of subscribers.

The uncertainty surrounding Netflix’s long-term strategy in Nigeria is stressed by its cautious investment approach.

While it has spotlighted Nigerian stories on a global stage, its financial commitment to the country is less in comparison to South Africa, which received 71% of Netflix’s $175 million investment in Africa between 2016 and 2023.

Reports predict that Netflix may need to reassess its pricing model and investment strategy to remain competitive.

The platform’s ongoing challenges are similar to those faced by Amazon Prime Video, which scaled back its operations in Africa due to low profitability.

Netflix’s denial of an exit reassures Nigerian audiences and creatives, but the market dynamics demand a better approach to strengthen its place in the country.

IHS Nigeria Partners with NCMM to Digitize Nigeria’s Cultural Heritage

IHS Nigeria, a telecommunication tower company, has announced a strategic partnership with the National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) and the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy (FMACCE) to support the digitization of Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

This collaboration aims to make Nigeria’s historical artifacts, artworks, and cultural monuments more accessible to the public through a digital museum.

The partnership between IHS Nigeria, NCMM, and FMACCE will leverage technologies to digitalize and display artifacts online, helping to preserve and showcase Nigeria’s cultural heritage. It marks a significant step towards modernizing the preservation and dissemination of Nigeria’s cultural assets, making them more accessible to a broader audience.

The digital museum is the first significant project under the Honorable Minister’s Digital Culture Initiative and is designed to provide a platform for the exploration and appreciation of Nigeria’s diverse cultural heritage.

This partnership underscores IHS Nigeria’s commitment to sustainability and its role in helping foster cultural preservation and digital education.

Mohamad Darwish, CEO, IHS Nigeria, commented,

  • Amazon Music Unlimited Challenges Spotify with Free Monthly Audiobook Perk for Subscribers

Amazon Music Unlimited Challenges Spotify with Free Monthly Audiobook Perk for Subscribers

Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers can now enjoy one free audiobook per month from Audible’s extensive catalogue at no extra cost.

This new feature is available to users in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada and is aimed at enhancing the attraction of its music streaming service while simultaneously challenging Spotify’s growing presence in the audiobook sector.

Subscribers to the individual and family plans of Amazon Music Unlimited can now choose an audiobook of their liking each month.

They may either continue listening to their selected title across billing cycles or opt for a new one in the subsequent cycle. This addition does not come with restrictions on audiobook length and is included as part of the existing subscription package.

Steve Boom, Amazon’s vice president of Audio, Twitch, and Games, described the development as a step towards broadening the reach of Audible’s industry-leading audiobook catalogue. “This introduces a new audience to the world of audiobooks by integrating them into the Amazon Music experience,” he noted.

This development comes as Amazon seeks to bolster its audio offerings in response to increasing competition in the market.

Spotify, which has become the second-largest audiobook provider, already includes limited audiobook access for its Premium subscribers across various regions, with a 15-hour monthly cap for free-tier users.

Spotify also launched an audiobook-exclusive plan earlier this year, intensifying competition in the space.

Meanwhile, Audible continues to offer its standalone plans starting at $7.95 per month, which include a mix of original audiobooks, podcasts, and sleep tracks. Its $14.95 plan provides subscribers with one premium audiobook each month, featuring bestsellers and new releases.

Amazon has been making strides to refine its book recommendation systems across platforms. Late last year, it introduced the “Your Books” tracker to consolidate saved or purchased titles from Amazon, Kindle, and Audible.

The company has also leveraged data from Prime Video to personalise audiobook suggestions for Audible users, further integrating its services to enhance user experience.

With the addition of audiobooks, Amazon Music Unlimited subscribers gain more value for their plans, which cost $10 per month for Amazon Prime members and $11 for non-members.

New customers can also take advantage of a three-month free trial to explore the service.

As a member of the Nigeria Press Organisation (NPO) and one of the drivers of the National Media Complaints Commission (NMCC), also known as the media Ombudsman, GOCOP plays a crucial role in ensuring that online publications maintain high standards of integrity and professionalism, thereby contributing positively to the media landscape in Nigeria.

“The legacy of Peace Anyiam-Osigwe is a reminder to us all of the transformative power of content that respects cultural heritage and inspires positive change.”

Speaking earlier in his welcome address, Executive Director of the NFVCB, Dr Husseini said: “As we gather to exchange ideas, forge new partnerships, and chart a course for Nigeria’s digital content regulation future, I want to emphasise the importance of collaboration and cooperation in our shared goal of promoting a vibrant and responsible creative sector.

“The whole idea of the digital content regulation conference was named after the late iconic writer, filmmaker and producer, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, and which I must credit my predecessor, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas.”

He noted that since the industry had the power to shape minds and influence culture, stakeholders needed to balance artistic expression with sensitivity and respect for the audience.

“By doing so, we are not only upholding the integrity of our industry but also contributing to a more informed and empathetic society,” Husseini said.

In her keynote address, Mo Abudu, the founder of EbonyLife Group, emphasised the importance of changing the narrative about Africa through content.

“As creatives, we must understand that with great power comes great responsibility. We must balance our creative freedom with the need to protect our audiences, particularly children, from harmful or inappropriate content.

“We can change the narrative about Africa with content. We must create stories that resonate with global audiences, stories that showcase our unique perspectives and experiences as Africans,” she said.

Hannatu Musawa, who was represented by General Manager of the National Theatre, Tola Akerele, commended NFVCB for organising the conference.

“I commend the NFVCB for organising this conference, which is a vital platform for discussing pressing issues in the digital space.

“It’s a great opportunity for stakeholders to come together and explore ways to promote the growth and development of the creative industry in Nigeria,” Musawa said.

  • Spotify Q3’24 Results: 640 Million Users | 250 Million Subscribers | €454 Million Operating Income

Spotify Q3’24 Results: 640 Million Users | 250 Million Subscribers | €454 Million Operating Income

Spotify has posted strong third-quarter results for 2024, revealing an 11% increase in monthly active users (MAUs), which now stand at 640 million, and a 12% rise in premium subscribers, reaching 252 million.

Financially, Spotify achieved a 19% year-on-year increase in total revenue, which reached €4 billion ($4.24 billion). The company’s operating income grew to €454 million ($482 million), a commendable increase from previous quarters.

With these results, Spotify is working to continually maintain growth and profitability, ensuring it meets its projected $1.5 billion operating profit for the full year.

A key factor driving this success is Spotify’s pricing and cost-cutting strategies. The platform’s gross margins improved to 31.1%, a successful adjustment in its business model.

The company’s strong performance in premium subscriptions, along with an uptick in ad-supported revenue, has further bolstered its financial health.

CEO Daniel Ek noted that the company’s success is a direct result of its focus on innovation and market expansion. “We’ve never been in a stronger position,” Ek said.

Our progress in Q3 demonstrates the strength of our execution and our commitment to growth. We are on track to meet our long-term goals, with continued innovation setting us up for future success.”

One of the drivers behind Spotify’s improved financials is the company’s restructuring in late 2023, which involved significant layoffs. This move, aimed at streamlining operations, helped reduce costs and contributed to Spotify’s strong bottom line.

While layoffs can often be challenging, Spotify has shown resilience, leveraging its workforce reduction to bolster profitability while continuing to attract new subscribers.

Going forward, Spotify is projecting further growth in Q4 2024, with expectations to reach 665 million monthly active users and add another 8 million premium subscribers.

The company is also forecasting an operating income of €481 million ($509 million) and total revenue of €4.1 billion, preparing a record-breaking year as it expands its premium and ad-supported segments.

  • Mark Zuckerberg and T-Pain Drop Surprising Acoustic Cover of ‘Get Low’—Is Music His Next Tech Pursuit?

Mark Zuckerberg and T-Pain Drop Surprising Acoustic Cover of ‘Get Low’—Is Music His Next Tech Pursuit?

Mark Zuckerberg has now added music to his expanding list of personal interests, unveiling his first track with hip-hop artist T-Pain.

Rather than a new composition, the duo reimagined the 2002 hit “Get Low,” delivering an acoustic rendition that marks a tribute to Zuckerberg’s relationship with his wife, Priscilla Chan.

The Meta CEO shared the surprise on Instagram, accompanied by a nostalgic caption explaining the significance of the song: “Get Low” was playing when he and Priscilla first crossed paths at a college party.

In a playful nod to their shared history, Zuckerberg decided to collaborate with T-Pain on a version of the song to mark their dating anniversary this year.

In the Instagram post, Zuckerberg included a series of photos, beginning with a throwback image of himself and Chan from their college days, alongside snapshots from the studio where he can be seen playing an acoustic guitar.

He described the cover as a tribute, jokingly calling it a “lyrical masterpiece.” The track, named “Z-Pain” in honour of their collaboration, is now available on Spotify.

Zuckerberg’s post quickly garnered mixed reactions, with comments ranging from admiration for his romantic gesture to playful jabs about the unexpected musical partnership.

The cover’s unique sound and casual style led many listeners to draw comparisons to Blink-182’s acoustic style, blending Zuckerberg’s and T-Pain’s vocals in a slower, more deliberate take on the rap song’s original lyrics.

The slowed-down version brings out the raw humour of lines like “skeet skeet skeet,” which struck many fans as both amusing and unusual coming from the tech mogul.

While Priscilla Chan’s reaction remains key to Zuckerberg’s efforts, online audiences quickly chimed in with a variety of responses.

Some followers celebrated the spontaneity of the collaboration, while others questioned the decision, noting the song’s infamous lyrics and contrasting them with Zuckerberg’s typically serious public image.

The unexpected musical release attracted wider attention on social media, particularly as T-Pain responded to the criticism in a light-hearted Instagram story.

He pointed out that some people struggle to embrace “wholesome fun” and defended the track as a personal project meant to bring joy, especially to Chan.

T-Pain urged detractors to “go outside and look at things,” stressing his belief that creative pursuits can be fulfilling regardless of public opinion.

Zuckerberg’s venture into music follows a pattern of unconventional projects among tech figures. Randi Zuckerberg, his sister, has previously recorded cryptocurrency-themed parody songs, while other entrepreneurs have made similarly surprising public performances.

Despite the playful and somewhat self-deprecating tone of the “Z-Pain” release, Zuckerberg’s debut in music shows his willingness to break out of the traditional tech CEO mould, bringing his personal interests into the spotlight in new ways.
