…Nigerian Naira Holds Steady Against US Dollar in Early Trading
The Nigerian naira maintained a stable posture against the U.S. dollar in early Monday trading across both official and parallel foreign exchange markets, local data showed.
The relative calm follows weeks of central bank interventions aimed at curbing volatility in West Africa’s largest economy.
Market Breakdown
According to local financial tracking and market reports compiled by Vanguard on Monday morning, the currency pair saw minor fluctuations within a tight trading band:
Official Window: In the early hours of Monday, the exchange rate hovered around 1,380.34 naira per dollar, reflecting a marginal 0.05% change from the market’s opening levels of approximately 1,379.64 naira.
Parallel Market: The unofficial street market, often seen as a barometer for retail demand, mirrored the stability of the official window, trading closely within similar margins as liquidity conditions remained steady at the start of the week.
Economic Outlook
Traders in Lagos noted that the currency’s current stability is being supported by sustained regulatory guidelines from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
However, analysts warn that long-term pressure on the naira persists due to sustained corporate demand for greenbacks and import financing dependencies.
The CBN has reiterated its commitment to boosting liquidity and eliminating speculative trading to foster a more predictable macroeconomic environment.
