embracing innovation

Nigeria needs to embrace innovation in all areas if it is to close the development gap. Nigeria is not an exception to the global trend that innovation is becoming more and more important to progress and development.

As long as we make sure that the global digital and technology revolution impacts every industry, there is considerable promise that Nigeria’s transition will go more quickly.

Nigeria faces numerous intricate issues, including poor infrastructure, food security, and access to healthcare. We can overcome these obstacles with new ideas if we embrace innovation. African entrepreneurs are breaking new ground in fields such as education, renewable energy, healthcare delivery, and agriculture by using affordable, sustainable technologies and mobile-based solutions.

Embracing Innovation for Food Security

About 70% of the unskilled work in Nigeria comes from the agricultural sector, which continues to play a vital role in the nation’s economy. Agriculture contributed 21.09% of the country’s GDP in 2022, according to the National Bureau of Statistics.

Due to the Boko Haram insurgency in the country’s northeast, population expansion, deforestation, flooding, locust invasion, and other factors, Nigeria is confronted with pre-existing issues with productivity in agriculture and food security.

Embracing innovation can help stimulate increases in agricultural productivity.” “The primary source of support for optimism about continued productivity increases” is technological advancement.

Today, Nigeria’s efforts to create sustained food security must include technological innovation. It comprises reducing greenhouse gas emissions, responding to climate change, and raising agricultural output and incomes in a sustainable manner.

The “hope of improving the nutritional benefits of many foods” is another benefit of biotechnology. Customers gain from its improved nutritional attributes, which include higher-quality protein content, less saturated fat content, more vitamins and minerals, and a host of additional benefits.

Embracing Innovation for Healthcare Delivery

The state of healthcare in Nigeria has long been a cause for concern. Delivering high-quality healthcare services has been severely hampered by a lack of resources, poor infrastructure, and restricted access, especially in basic care settings in Nigeria.

But as revolutionary alternatives like digital health and healthcare consulting have surfaced in recent years, there has been a glimpse of hope.

The majority of digital advancements in healthcare, including genetic testing, telemedicine, personalized treatment, and e-healthcare, have great potential to enhance the delivery of healthcare services.

The disparity in digital access is still incredibly large in Nigeria. When compared to other industries like finance and commerce, where technology has been heavily adopted, the utilization of technical resources and tools in healthcare delivery is noticeably low.

However, to fully embrace innovation in the health sector, Nigeria must create a robust healthcare system that is dependable, inexpensive, and available to all Nigerians, regardless of their socioeconomic standing or place of residence.

Industry 4.0 Infrastructure

The current obstacles Nigeria faces in embracing innovation are not unrelated to the scarcity of infrastructure enablers such as electricity and internet connectivity, the shortage of professionals with the necessary training, and, more crucially, the lack of knowledge.

Institutional, infrastructure, and policy support that will enable the creation of new business models in healthcare delivery are necessary for the success of digital healthcare and agriculture. Investments in people and procedures, institutional capacity, digital infrastructure, governance, and ecosystem enablers all need to be focused on.

Innovation-loving people are more inclined to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset, which boosts their ability to identify market gaps, develop products and services that revolutionize the industry, and launch profitable businesses.
