Snapdragon Wear Elite

Snapdragon Wear Elite

When Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform at the recently concluded Mobile World Congress, the company was not just launching a chipset for wearables with incremental changes from the previous Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform.

The Snapdragon Wear Elite is Qualcomm’s newest wearable platform after a three-year wait, and it comes with something different from its predecessors; AI capabilities.

This new Snapdragon chip for wearables was designed to be AI-focused, and it represents Qualcomm’s push to power the next generation of personal devices with AI that runs directly on them, rather than relying heavily on the cloud.

Key Hardware and AI Features

  • Architecture: Built on a 3nm manufacturing process and includes CPU, GPU, and dedicated AI processors (NPU + eNPU)
  • Performance: It comes with up to 5× faster single-core CPU performance and about 7× faster GPU performance than the previous Snapdragon W5+ Gen 2 platform
  • AI features: Comes with a dedicated Hexagon NPU for on-device AI. It supports AI models with up to 2 billion parameters, around 10–12 TOPS AI performance.
  • Connectivity: Supports connectivity features such as 5G RedCap, Bluetooth 6.0, Wi-Fi, UWB, GNSS, and satellite connectivity support.
  • Battery: Supports 30% longer battery life than the previous Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform.

How the Snapdragon Wear Elite Platform Could Improve the Wearable Device Market

The launch of the Wear Elite platform could take the wearable market to the next level due to its versatility and integration with AI functionalities.

Below are some specific areas where it could influence the next wave of wearable devices.

Expanding Wearable Tech Beyond Smartwatches

In 2026, wearable tech means more than smartwatches. It now includes lightweight hardware like AI pins and pendants, smart glasses, and health and fitness trackers.

The new Snapdragon Wear Elite platform was designed to bring its AI functionality to these wearable devices. Integration of this chip could create entirely new device categories, helping manufacturers to experiment with different AI wearable form factors

Improved Battery Life and Performance

Over the years, wearables like Smartwatches and smart glasses have struggled with the problem of battery efficiency because their small size may not be enough to fit in a good battery. The Snapdragon Wear Elite platform solves this issue with:

  • Up to 5× faster CPU performance
  • Up to 7× faster GPU performance
  • Around 30% longer battery life thanks to its 3nm design.

This improvement allows wearables to support more advanced applications such as AI assistance and continuous health monitoring running throughout the day.

Strong Ecosystem Support

This new chipset would be irrelevant without ecosystem support. At launch, the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform already had backing from top tech manufacturers, including Samsung, Google, and Motorola.

A strong ecosystem is very important because it ensures that the platform appears on multiple gadgets across brands and helps to boost adoption.

Devices Expected to Launch With the Chip

Although no wearable device is currently available with this chip, several upcoming devices have been linked to the Snapdragon Wear Elite platform.

Samsung confirmed plans to power its next watches with AI health features and improved efficiency. Motorola also demonstrated a wearable concept called Project Maxwell at the MWC 2026, an AI pendant device that would use the Snapdragon Wear Elite chip.

Because the platform is well optimised with Google’s WearOS, expect it to appear in their next Pixel smartwatches or in wearables from companies that partner with Google.

Therefore…

The new Snapdragon Wear Elite platform is a direct predecessor of the Snapdragon W5 Gen 2. The core difference is in the design of the Wear Elite, which centres around local AI processing in wearables. Qualcomm changed the naming to Wear Elite to emphasise its AI focus.

The Snapdragon Wear Elite could potentially drive the next phase of wearable tech by bringing powerful local AI processing and power efficiency. And with global brands involved, this shift might be sooner than we think.
