Stanley Anigbogu, CEO at LightEd

The pressing need for alternative lighting solutions is underscored by the staggering expenditure of nearly $310,000 annually by small businesses in Nigeria on alternative power sources. This expenditure reflects the immense demand for a safer, more sustainable lighting option that can alleviate both economic burdens and safety concerns.

As Nigeria grapples with one of the world’s most pronounced energy access disparities, leaving over 90 million people, constituting 43% of the population, in darkness, LightEd stands at the forefront of addressing this challenge, striving to deliver clean, affordable, and dependable energy solutions to students and families residing in rural communities across Nigeria.

Stanley Anigbogu launched LightEd to help thousands of the most vulnerable people in Nigeria have a better quality of life and access to one of the most essential utilities: energy.

Building on his knowledge as an engineer and a passion for providing solutions for local communities, the founder launched LightEd to provide sustainable and affordable lighting solutions, combining recycled plastic and electronic materials to create clean energy through lamps and solar stations.

Furthermore, the proliferation of electronic waste (e-waste) poses a dual challenge of environmental degradation and resource waste. In 2019, Africa generated 2.9 million metric tons of e-waste, equating to 2.5 kilograms per capita, the lowest regional rate globally.

Despite its relatively lower volume, the economic value of raw materials within global e-waste stands at a staggering $57 billion, with elements like iron, copper, and gold constituting major contributors.

However, the prevailing recycling methods, which are predominantly reliant on burning, exacerbate environmental pollution and health hazards. LightEd recognizes the urgent need to address this unsustainable cycle by championing eco-friendly and socially responsible approaches to e-waste management.

A Tailor-made Solution from LightEd

LightEd pioneers the development of renewable, solar-powered lighting solutions tailored to the unique needs of students, rural families, small business proprietors, and refugees.

The innovative approach combines energy accessibility and electronic waste recycling, presenting a holistic solution to two pressing global challenges. LightEd embarks on a mission to repurpose electronic waste and locally sourced materials to craft sustainable solar home systems.

These systems represent a beacon of hope for communities grappling with energy poverty while simultaneously addressing the burgeoning issue of electronic waste accumulation. LightEd’s flagship product, the LightEd Plus System, epitomizes this commitment to sustainability and innovation.

The product was developed utilizing components sourced from discarded CPU power systems and has gained significant traction in the market within Anambra State, Nigeria.

What sets the LightEd Plus System apart is its composition, with 70% of its electrical and electronic components sourced locally from e-waste recyclers. By leveraging their expertise and harnessing readily available components from e-waste markets, LightEd ensures the accessibility and affordability of their solutions while fostering collaboration with local stakeholders.

This collaborative approach not only maximizes the utilization of electronic waste resources but also empowers local economies and promotes circularity in the electronics industry.

Through the strategic integration of renewable energy technologies and eco-friendly materials, LightEd exemplifies the potential for synergy between environmental conservation and social empowerment. By illuminating homes, businesses, and educational institutions with sustainable energy solutions, LightEd illuminates pathways to a brighter, more resilient future for communities in Nigeria.

By promoting recycling practices that prioritize environmental preservation and human well-being, LigthEd aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of e-waste while harnessing its potential for sustainable resource utilization.

Building on Innovation

LightEd’s dedication to innovation and sustainability drives them to continuously enhance their technology and refine their processes. The company’s relentless pursuit of technological advancement propels it forward, positioning it on the precipice of a circular economy, where resources are utilized and recycled in a sustainable loop.

Beyond refining their technology, they aim to expand their reach to new communities and market segments, ensuring that their impact is felt far and wide. By bolstering their technology and business model, they fortify their foundation for sustained growth and impact, paving the way for a brighter future for all.

Furthermore, LightEd recognizes the power of partnerships in driving meaningful change and is seeking collaborations and forging alliances with like-minded organizations to amplify their impact projects.

In essence, LigthEd’s mission transcends mere illumination; it embodies a commitment to catalyzing socio-economic development, safeguarding environmental integrity, and nurturing a brighter, more sustainable future for communities across Nigeria and beyond.
