How the Port Harcourt Tech Ecosystem can Move Beyond Just Honing Tech Skills

The conception of skills can be very useful to increase the level of innovativeness within an ecosystem. For example, the Port Harcourt tech industry has seen a surge in individuals equipped with the necessary tech skills to advance the industry.

More so, there has been a growing awareness that equipping young individuals with 21st-century tech skills will help prepare them for the occupations of the future and improve their employability in a competitive market.

Thus far, the Port Harcourt ecosystem has been able to achieve a surge in skills necessary to build competitive businesses. However, the city is yet to experience a concurrent surge in the application of skills in innovative ventures.

Starting a startup can be an exhilarating experience. Aside from the excitement of growth, there is also the flip side of the constant pressure that comes with running a startup. The long hours, the unending list of tasks, and the weight of responsibility can take a toll on even the most passionate innovator.

There are several smart, driven, and skilled people in Port Harcourt whose experience and knowledge could help them build competitive businesses – but still, they wake up every morning and are unmotivated about the idea.

Establishing a local startup ecosystem necessitates a thorough comprehension of the ecosystem processes that impact its growth; failing to recognize these processes has a detrimental impact on startup ecosystem operations.

These elements include the availability of capital and investment opportunities, the workforce’s skill and education, access to the required infrastructure and resources, and the networking and support services provided by regional associations and governmental entities.

When it comes to fostering a robust startup ecosystem in the face of market disruptions and economic uncertainty, these factors are vital.

Excellent concepts need to become successful ventures.  It’s perhaps time for digital hubs to start developing people who are prepared to launch their own businesses, rather than merely serving as places to acquire skills.  All startups are difficult, so you might as well be working on very ambitious projects.

Great business owners who have learned from past mistakes will ultimately determine whether their companies succeed and, consequently, whether the ecosystem succeeds.

The actors in the overall ecosystem must decentralize equity at all levels of innovators in order to go beyond simply improving tech skills in Port Harcourt.  It is preferable to use accelerators to distribute equity all the way down to the local level. This will help create innovators who have new-found funds to start their next startup, powering the ecosystem to the next level.
