The Federal Government has launched Nigeria’s first Manufacturing Technology University Innovation Pod (Manu-Tech UniPod) to boost manufacturing, innovation, entrepreneurship and job creation.

The facility, located at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) in Abia State, is a strategic collaboration between the Federal Government, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and the Abia State Government.

According to a statement issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the UniPod is designed to transform universities from traditional ivory towers into centres for research, commercialisation, technology transfer and enterprise development.

Speaking on behalf of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Dr Maruf Olatunji Alausa, the minister of Education, stressed that the project is a commendable move to reposition higher education as an engine for economic growth.

“Our universities must become the birthplace of innovation, manufacturing and enterprise. Education must no longer be separated from production, research from industry or knowledge from economic prosperity. That transformation begins here,” Dr Alausa stated.

He further noted that the initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy by 2030, which relies heavily on equipping the youth with future-ready skills and the necessary infrastructure to scale indigenous businesses.

Alex Otti, Abia State Governor, welcomed the development, noting that the choice of MOUAU reiterates the state’s status as an emerging manufacturing and industrial hub.

Governor Otti described the UniPod as one that will empower the state’s youth population to move into the realm of large-scale production and global market participation.

In his words:

“The UniPod will drive innovation, entrepreneurship, MSME growth, investment and sustainable jobs. As we deepen partnerships with UNDP and others, we look forward to expanding initiatives like the Jubilee Fellows Programme, Aba Export Growth Lab, energy investments, industrial competitiveness and community innovation centres and other strategic interventions that will broaden opportunities for our people.

“I commend the Federal Government, TETFund, UNDP, MOUAU and all partners whose collaboration made this possible. With the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) opening access to a market of over 1.4 billion people across Africa, our task is clear: innovate, produce and compete globally.

The UniPod ecosystem is designed to bridge the long-standing disconnect between academic research and industrial application.

By consolidating students, researchers, innovators, manufacturers, and investors in one space, the facility enables a seamless transition from conceptualisation to market-ready products.

Key technical pillars of the facility include:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Industrial Automation.
  • Advanced Manufacturing Technologies and Digital Design.
  • Agro-processing integration to boost agricultural value chains.
  • Prototyping and Commercialisation

Mr Ilharo Attah, special adviser on Media and Communications to the Minister, added that the project aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises industrialisation and youth empowerment as the cornerstones of national development.

“The Ministry will continue to partner with TETFund, UNDP, universities, industry and development partners to establish innovation ecosystems across the country, ensuring that Nigerian universities become centres of research excellence, industrial competitiveness and enterprise creation,” Attah noted.
