Meta has rolled out a major update to Facebook Reels, introducing smarter recommendations, interactive friend features, and enhanced personalization tools aimed at making the platform more engaging, social, and tailored to user preferences.
The company announced the upgrade in a blog post titled “Upgrading Facebook Reels – Now Smarter, Faster, and More Social,” describing it as part of its continued investment in improving the overall video experience on Facebook.
Smarter, Faster Recommendations
According to Meta, Facebook’s upgraded recommendation engine now understands user interests faster, surfacing 50% more reels from creators published that same day. This means users will see fresher, more relevant content—whether it’s short clips, creator vlogs, or DIY tutorials.
The company revealed that time spent watching videos on Facebook has grown by more than 20% year-over-year in the United States, underscoring the platform’s growing dominance as a home for all types of video content.
Meta added that the new algorithm now responds better to feedback. Users can tap “Not Interested” on a reel or flag a comment that doesn’t align with their preferences, allowing the system to instantly adjust recommendations. Similarly, saving favorite reels or posts will help fine-tune personalized suggestions—an improvement Meta says has led to increased global watch time.
Friend Bubbles: A More Social Viewing Experience
Among the most interactive additions is “Friend Bubbles,” a new feature that lets users see which of their friends have liked a particular reel or post. By tapping the bubble, users can start a private chat directly from the reel—bridging social interaction with content discovery.
Meta says the feature brings Facebook back to its roots of connecting people through shared interests, allowing friends to catch up, exchange thoughts, or discover new creators together.
AI-Powered Exploration
Facebook Reels is also gaining AI-powered suggested search, helping users dive deeper into topics they care about—without leaving the reels player. This new feature enables discovery of more content around specific themes, creators, or trends, enhancing engagement and curiosity.
More Control for Users
Meta highlighted that users now have more control than ever over their Reels experience. With easier feedback tools and improved saving options, Facebook aims to balance algorithmic intelligence with human choice, ensuring that every user’s feed reflects their genuine interests.
Looking Ahead
Meta says these updates mark the beginning of a new phase for Facebook Reels—one that focuses on personalization, community connection, and user empowerment.
“The magic of Facebook has always been in connecting with others,” the company said. “These new features make it easier to connect with friends over the content you care about, while giving you more ways to shape your viewing experience.”
