Sexual health is an integral aspect of overall well-being, yet it is often neglected or taboo in many societies, including Nigeria. Platforms like myPaddi play a crucial role in normalizing discussions around sexual health and empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their bodies and relationships.

By providing accurate information, access to healthcare professionals, and discreet delivery of sexual health products, myPaddi helps individuals take control of their sexual and reproductive health.

In Nigeria, discussing sexual and reproductive health (SRH) matters can often be met with silence, stigma, and discomfort. Yet, these are crucial conversations that affect the physical, emotional, and mental well-being of individuals, especially young people.

In a society where cultural norms and taboos often silence discussions on sensitive topics like sex, platforms like myPaddi are creating safe spaces for individuals to seek accurate information, support, and guidance regarding their sexual and reproductive health.

Edo-based myPaddi, an initiative by MOBicure, launched in 2017, fills a critical gap in Nigeria’s healthcare landscape by providing a safe and confidential platform for individuals to access accurate SRH information and products.

Through the myPaddi app, users can consult with qualified healthcare professionals, including doctors and certified therapists, without fear of judgment or stigma. This anonymity and privacy empower individuals to seek the care they need without fear of social repercussions.

Addressing Challenges

MOBicure utilizes mobile technology devices such as phones, tablets, apps, and interactive voice recordings (IVRs) to address sexual and reproductive health issues, maternal and child care, and mental wellness. The platform offers a wide range of services, including consultations with doctors and certified therapists, to cater to diverse healthcare needs.

As users engaged with doctors on the app, it became evident that many young people were grappling with mental health issues. To address this, myPaddi integrated certified therapists into the app, providing users with a safe space to seek support and guidance for mental wellness.

Stigmatization surrounding sexual and reproductive health issues is a significant barrier to accessing essential care and information in Nigeria. Individuals may fear judgment, shame, or discrimination when discussing topics such as contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or sexual orientation. This fear of stigma can lead to secrecy, misinformation, and ultimately poor health outcomes.

Additionally, the lack of health professionals trained to address sexual and reproductive health concerns further exacerbates the issue. Many young people in Nigeria may not have access to knowledgeable and non-judgmental healthcare providers who can provide accurate information and guidance.

Recognizing the need for discretion in accessing sexual health products, myPaddi ventured into providing test kits, contraceptives, and other SRH products discreetly to interested users. This initiative aimed to bridge the gap between healthcare advice and practical access to essential products.

Emotional well-being is intrinsically linked to sexual and reproductive health. Issues such as relationship challenges, body image concerns, and gender identity struggles can significantly impact an individual’s emotional health and contribute to feelings of anxiety, depression, or low self-esteem.

Having a safe space to discuss these issues openly and receive support and guidance can promote emotional balance and resilience.

Expanding Reach and Impact

myPaddi’s impact extends beyond Nigeria, with deliveries made to 46 cities in Nigeria and 4 cities across the continent. The platform’s reach continues to grow, reaching diverse populations and making healthcare more accessible to all.

In addition to its core services, myPaddi introduced the UnboxED game series to deepen knowledge about sexual health and safe sex practices. With editions tailored for families and young adults, these games offer a fun and interactive way to engage in conversations about sexual health.

Platforms like myPaddi are invaluable resources for breaking the silence, stigma, and barriers to accessing essential care, ultimately contributing to a healthier and more informed society.
