Starlink Internet Service Nig. Ltd., an internet service provider and licensee of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), recorded more than 11,000 subscribers as at third quarter 2023, Techeconomy can report.
Starlink, a satellite internet service owned by Elon Musk, became available for customers in Nigeria in January 2023 weeks after preorder sales were announced.
The company had said customers interested could preorder the starter kits at the price of $600 for the hardware and $43 per month for subscriptions to its services.
In a post on its Twitter page on January 30 Starlink disclosed the availability of its service in the country.
“Starlink is now available in Nigeria – the first African country to receive service,” the tweet reads.
Flip to third quarter 2023, Starlink recorded 11,207 active wireless internet subscribers according to checks by Techeconomy on NCC’s website.
With this record, Starlink now ranks among the top 10 internet service providers (ISPs) in Nigeria.
In 2021, the company, which saw Nigeria as a critical market, was in talks with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to secure the licences needed to launch.
One year later, Elon Musk announced that Starlink had been approved for deployment in Nigeria.
