The newly appointed Acting Comptroller-General (C-G) of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Adewale Adeniyi, has expressed his commitment to running a highly technologically-driven organization in line with global best practices.
In his address to the top echelon of the Service after assuming office, he emphasized the need to recognize the modern realities and challenges faced by Customs operations.
Adeniyi acknowledged the impact of e-commerce, global supply chains, and transnational criminal networks, and stressed the importance of adapting to changing landscapes through the use of technology, intelligence-led operations, and effective risk management strategies.
He also highlighted the significance of collaboration with international partners, law enforcement agencies, and customs administrations of other nations to combat illicit trade and secure national interests.
Adeniyi praised the signing of the new Customs Act as a remarkable achievement for the NCS, as it provides a robust legal framework aligned with international best practices, ensuring transparency, efficiency, and compliance in operations.
He emphasized the opportunity presented by the act to introduce innovative measures such as advanced risk management systems, cutting-edge technologies, and simplified trade procedures to enhance customs processes, boost revenue generation, and promote a conducive business environment.
Adeniyi further vowed to dismantle obstacles to trade in the country, prioritizing efficiency in service delivery, trade facilitation, and revenue generation. He emphasized the principles of professionalism, integrity, and the highest ethical standards that would guide his administration.
Adeniyi acknowledged the importance of bridging the human resource gap within the ranks of the NCS, emphasizing the administration’s commitment to capacity building, career advancement, and competence-based assignments.
Regarding staff welfare, Adeniyi recognized the challenging environment in which customs officers work and pledged to prioritize their well-being by providing better remuneration, improved accommodation, life insurance, and quality healthcare.
He stressed the importance of a well-motivated workforce in achieving the aims and objectives of the NCS. Adeniyi also highlighted the importance of collaboration and partnership with other government agencies and stakeholders to ensure a smooth trading environment and national security.
