The House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission, to ensure internet service providers blocked all websites hosting pornographic contents in the country.

The resolution was passed on Tuesday after a motion sponsored by Dalhatu Tafoki, a lawmaker from Katsina State, who argued that unrestricted access to pornography is eroding societal values, particularly among young people.

Tafoki cited examples of countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East that have enacted laws prohibiting pornography.

He also referenced concerns from psychologists and sociologists who warn that pornography can contribute to moral decay, including issues such as adultery, prostitution, and addiction.

“Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content,” Tafoki stated.

The motion received broad support, with lawmakers approving it through a voice vote presided over by House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

Supporters of the motion stressed the need to uphold Nigerian cultural and moral values by restricting access to explicit content.

They called on the NCC to ensure immediate compliance from internet service providers and to impose penalties on those that fail to enforce the directive to block pornographic sites and contents.
