Nigeria’s passport has fallen to 90th place in the latest Henley Passport Index, slipping one position from its January ranking as the number of destinations accessible to Nigerian passport holders without a prior visa declined.
The quarterly index, compiled by London-based advisory firm Henley & Partners using data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), ranked 199 passports according to the number of destinations their holders can enter without obtaining a visa in advance.
Nigeria now shares the 90th position with Ethiopia and Myanmar, with citizens able to travel to 45 destinations visa-free or with visa-on-arrival access, down from 46 destinations in the January edition of the index.
The decline reverses part of the improvement recorded earlier this year when Nigeria climbed from 103rd to 89th in the January rankings following changes in the relative performance of other countries.
Singapore retained the world’s most powerful passport, offering visa-free access to 192 destinations. Japan, South Korea and the United Arab Emirates jointly ranked second with access to 187 destinations, while several European countries occupied the next positions.
At the bottom of the ranking, Afghanistan remained the weakest passport globally, with holders able to access only 23 destinations without obtaining a visa beforehand.
The Henley Passport Index is updated quarterly and is widely used as a measure of global mobility, reflecting changes in visa policies and international travel agreements rather than economic performance alone.
