Tola Odeyemi | NIPOST | National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System

Nigeria is moving closer to solving one of its most persistent infrastructure challenges, accurate addressing, as the Federal Government, through the Nigerian Postal Service, advances plans to assign a unique digital postcode to every building across the country.

The initiative, known as the National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, is expected to provide a standardized digital address for homes, businesses, and public institutions, enabling faster service delivery, improved security, and more efficient logistics operations nationwide.

Speaking on the initiative, Dr. Bosun Tijani, the minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, described the digital postcode system as a critical national infrastructure project that will support Nigeria’s growing digital economy.

“Beyond strengthening postal operations, the Digital Postcode System will also serve as an important national enabler supporting better national planning, improved emergency response, more efficient logistics and e-commerce, and the delivery of government services,” Tijani said.

The system, recently approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), will leverage Geographic Information System (GIS) technology to assign unique alphanumeric codes to precise locations across Nigeria, replacing the limitations of the country’s traditional addressing framework.

According to Tijani, the initiative represents another milestone in the government’s efforts to build the digital infrastructure required for a modern economy.

“This approval represents another step forward in our commitment to building the enabling environment to support a modern, inclusive, and globally competitive digital economy,” he added.

For years, logistics providers, e-commerce companies, emergency responders, and public agencies have grappled with poor address systems, often relying on landmarks and verbal directions to locate people and businesses.

The new digital postcode system is expected to eliminate these inefficiencies by creating an accurate, location-based national addressing framework.

NIPOST believes the initiative will unlock significant economic and social benefits. Earlier, the agency had highlighted the transformational impact of a nationwide digital addressing system.

“The National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System is an initiative that has the potential to significantly improve nationwide service delivery, enhance security, and generate revenue for NIPOST and other government agencies,” said Adeyemi Adepoju, former Postmaster-General.

He further noted that the system’s benefits extend beyond postal services.

“It also has far-reaching public and private sector benefits, including crime prevention, identity fraud reduction, emergency services coordination, border control, e-commerce, data collection, financial inclusion, healthcare access, and tourism.”

The current phase of the project is being driven by NIPOST under the leadership of Postmaster-General, Tola Odeyemi.

According to her, the digital postcode system is foundational to improving service delivery and enabling digital commerce across Nigeria.

“It is critical national infrastructure that enables e-commerce, logistics, emergency services, financial inclusion, security, urban planning, and effective public service delivery,” Odeyemi said.

She also revealed the scale of economic losses caused by inefficient addressing systems.

“Right now, in Nigeria, the cost of missed deliveries is anywhere from N50 billion to N80 billion for people just running around, drivers just running around, not knowing where to go,” she stated.

The first phase of the rollout is expected to commence in October, with government agencies and stakeholders preparing nationwide awareness campaigns ahead of implementation. Nigerians will be able to access the system through digital platforms, mobile applications, and USSD channels, while businesses are expected to benefit from AI-powered routing and location intelligence tools.

As Nigeria’s digital economy continues to expand, industry stakeholders view the digital postcode initiative as a game-changing infrastructure project capable of improving logistics efficiency, enhancing public safety, strengthening identity verification, and accelerating financial inclusion across the country.
