NITDA to Launch Nigeria’s Digital Trustmark Seal to Strengthen Online Safety

… Boost Confidence in the Digital Economy

Nigerian Digital Trustmark Seal

As cyber threats rise, Nigeria moves to fortify its digital ecosystem with a homegrown seal of trust.

In an era where a single click can open doors to opportunity, or expose users to risk, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) is taking bold steps to rebuild confidence in Nigeria’s online space.

As part of its mandate to strengthen national security through cybersecurity, NITDA has announced plans to launch the Nigerian Digital Trustmark Seal, a landmark initiative designed to verify the authenticity of websites, e-commerce platforms, and online businesses across the country.

The announcement came during a press conference in Abuja to commemorate Cybersecurity Awareness Month, attended by representatives of the National Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the media, and key players in Nigeria’s digital economy.

A New Layer of Trust for the Digital Age

Speaking at the event, Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, director general of NITDA, said the initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes national security, economic diversification, and inclusive governance.

“The digital economy has been the fastest-growing sector in Nigeria for almost five years, surpassing oil and gas in GDP contribution,” Inuwa said. “But as we digitise, challenges emerge. Technology is a double-edged sword, while good actors use it to drive efficiency, bad actors exploit it to cause harm and erode public trust.”

According to him, the Digital Trustmark Seal, co-created by NITDA, NACCIMA, and GIZ, will serve as a visible symbol of authenticity on verified websites, helping users easily identify legitimate businesses and avoid fraudulent or cloned sites often used for scams and data theft.

“Every company, e-commerce platform, business, and government organisation will soon be able to display the Trustmark Seal on their website,” Inuwa explained. “It will help citizens know they’re engaging with real entities, not impostors.”

Collaboration at the Heart of Cyber Trust

Inuwa emphasized that cybersecurity and digital trust cannot be achieved in isolation. “Building trust in the digital space is a collective responsibility,” he noted. “This initiative will work closely with the private sector, the main drivers of adoption, because it strengthens their reputation and customer confidence.”

He added that citizens also stand to benefit directly. “When users interact and transact online, they want to be sure they’re dealing with authentic websites. That confidence is what this seal represents.”

The NITDA DG also called on the media to play a crucial role in shaping public awareness and promoting Nigeria’s digital reputation globally. “The media are essential partners in this journey, they can amplify awareness, enlighten citizens, and help rebrand Nigeria’s digital image on the world stage,” he said.

Private Sector, Partners Applaud Initiative

Representing NACCIMA, Mr. Suleiman Adebayo Audu, an advisor to the Association, described the project as “a timely and impactful intervention” that will enhance business confidence and global perception.

“Many genuine Nigerian businesses lose customers due to a lack of trust,” he noted. “This seal will help restore credibility and make Nigerian SMEs more competitive internationally. NACCIMA will work with our state chambers to sensitise members and support them through the verification process.”

Similarly, Mr. Chinedu Albert, a consultant with GIZ, reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to the project, stating that it aligns with GIZ’s mission of promoting safe, inclusive, and transparent digital ecosystems across Africa.

“Trust is the foundation of every digital transaction,” he said. “Without it, progress slows down. Our role is to provide technical expertise and international best practices to ensure the seal benefits all, including women-led businesses and startups.”

Towards a More Trusted Digital Future

Providing a technical overview, Dr. Mohammed Lawan, Director of NITDA’s Cybersecurity Department, described the Trustmark as a “verifiable digital signature” that will reduce online fraud and enhance Nigeria’s credibility globally.

“Trust is the currency of the digital economy,” Dr. Lawan said. “With this seal, we’re laying the foundation for a secure, trustworthy, and globally respected digital environment.”

He revealed that NITDA will soon roll out stakeholder engagements, capacity-building workshops, and sensitisation campaigns to encourage nationwide adoption of the Digital Trustmark Seal among businesses, service providers, and government agencies.

A Trustmark for the Digital Era

As Nigeria pushes further into its digital transformation journey, the Trustmark Seal could become one of the most defining innovations for rebuilding public confidence online, making it safer for citizens to transact, communicate, and innovate in a secure digital economy.

Inuwa summed it up succinctly:

“When trust thrives online, the economy thrives offline. The Digital Trustmark Seal is not just a cybersecurity measure, it’s a national confidence booster.”
