OPay, a financial service provider in Nigeria, has made a commendable contribution to the education sector by awarding ₦12 million in scholarships to 40 students at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria.
Each student will receive ₦300,000, a gesture designed to alleviate financial challenges and encourage academic success.
The scholarship presentation took place at the Vice-Chancellor’s office, where Mr Dauda Gotring, OPay’s Managing Director and an alumnus of ABU, noted his personal pride in supporting the university that played an important role in his own development.
Gotring shared, “At OPay, we believe in the power of education to transform lives. ABU holds a special place in my heart, and I’m thrilled to help students here who demonstrate exceptional potential and drive.”
Prof. Kabiru Bala, ABU’s vice-chancellor, thanked OPay for its generosity, acknowledging the impact the scholarships would have on the students’ academic journeys. “This support will lighten the financial burden for many students, enabling them to concentrate fully on their studies and aspirations,” he said.
OPay’s scholarship programme is part of an initiative that aims to provide financial support to 400 students annually across various Nigerian universities, including the University of Ibadan and Nnamdi Azikiwe University.
With an investment of ₦120 million each year, this initiative seeks to empower the next generation of Nigerian leaders and offer greater opportunities to students in need.
The company’s focus on community development includes the advancement of women’s empowerment in Zaria through entrepreneurship programmes, startup support, and skills development.
Investing in both education and economic opportunities is OPay’s way of ensuring long-lasting positive change that will benefit local communities and contribute to Nigeria’s growth.
