OpenAI has appointed Gabor Cselle, the ex-CEO and co-founder of the now-defunct social media platform Pebble, to contribute to a confidential initiative.

Cselle disclosed his new position on X, noting that he has been with OpenAI since October and sees huge success in his ongoing work. He stated, “Will share more about what I’m working on in due time.”

Cselle first garnered attention with reMail, a mobile email service that caught the eye of Y Combinator and was subsequently acquired by Google. He followed this success with Namo Media, a native advertising firm, which was bought by Twitter before the company was rebranded as X under Elon Musk.

His experience in the tech sector includes a tenure at Twitter, where he served as a group product manager. In this role, he focused on enhancing the user experience, particularly regarding the home timeline and user onboarding processes.

After departing from Twitter in 2016, Cselle joined Google, where he led the Area 120 incubator, focused on developing innovative spin-offs.

In 2022, Cselle co-founded Pebble, a platform designed to promote safety and moderation in social media interactions. Despite some initial traction and backing from notable investors, including Android co-founder Rich Miner, Pebble ultimately struggled to maintain growth and ceased operations last October. It later reemerged as a Mastodon instance.

Before his latest venture with OpenAI, Gabor Cselle engaged with South Park Commons, an accelerator where he explored various generative AI prototypes, including a tribute to the popular HQ Trivia game.

Cselle’s hiring at OpenAI coincides with other industry movements, as rival firm Anthropic has also made headlines by recruiting Alex Rodrigues, the founder of autonomous trucking company Embark, as an AI safety researcher.
