Bolt Invests €100m to Enhance Platform Safety Over Three Years

Bolt, a leading ride-hailing platform, today announced a significant commitment of €100 million over the next three years to bolster safety measures on its platform.

    This investment will support

The Bolt Safety Team in its critical work of product development, customer support, safety feature awareness, and preventative measures to minimize safety incidents. The announcement was made during a global safety campaign launch event held in Lagos.

The event brought together key stakeholders, including the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, representatives from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO), safety experts, Bolt representatives, and members of the media.

Bolt’s dedicated Safety Team of over 500 specialists works tirelessly to achieve the company’s safety goals.

The team comprises Safety Specialists who provide 24/7 customer support from Bolt’s Safety Hubs across the globe and Safety Experts based in Tallinn, Estonia, who focus on product development, engineering, and operations.

Osi Oguah, General Manager at Bolt Nigeria said:

“We take our responsibility to ensure the safety of our platform very seriously. With €100 million committed over three years to safety, we recognise that this requires an end-to-end approach across our business in Nigeria. That’s why The Bolt Safety Team of over 500 specialists from across the world will focus their efforts on product development, support, and scaling preventative measures to stop safety cases before they happen in that time. We’ll also continue to raise awareness of our safety tools with educational campaigns like the current ‘Bolt Safety Team’ campaign running in Nigeria to raise awareness of the in-app features that we know can help prevent cases.”

Speaking at the event, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, Lagos State Commissioner of Transportation said: “I commend Bolt for its continuous collaboration with the Lagos State Government and its proactive approach to enhance safety measures on its platform.

Given the importance of a safer transportation ecosystem, it is our responsibility as a progressive government to encourage collaboration among all key stakeholders, including private sector operators like Bolt”.

As part of the commitment, new trip verification features will join Bolt’s suite of safety tools in the coming months to help address the critical role of mutual trust between driver partners and riders in the safety of the platform, including trip count and unique four-digit trip pick-up codes to help match riders and driver partners. Bolt will also continue to scale its Rider Verification solution.

Bolt will also continue to invest in upgrading existing features like Ride Check to proactively detect if a trip’s route unexpectedly changes or takes longer than expected to finish, and introduce Trusted Contacts to ensure Ride Check notifications are escalated to a friend or loved one if needed.

Record Audio will continue to support The Bolt Safety Team’s safety investigations and has already been used to trigger in-app audio recordings to submit with Customer Support tickets across 14 markets including Nigeria since launch.

This all supports The Bolt Safety Team’s work in partnership with regulators, drivers, and police to raise awareness of safety issues through events such as Safety Summit.

  • Nigeria’s High Rating in Global Real-time Payments a Sign of Fintech Resilience – Cynthia Alabi

Nigeria’s High Rating in Global Real-time Payments a Sign of Fintech Resilience – Cynthia Alabi

Nigeria’s recognition as a leader in real-time payments and digital payments in Africa and beyond, is a sign of a resilient banking and fintech solutions, says tech expert, Cynthia Alabi.

In 2021, Nigeria ranked sixth in the world’s most developed real-time payments markets, with 3.7 billion real-time transactions.

As of 2023, Africa’s fintech market is valued at approximately $31 billion and is projected to reach $54 billion by 2027, growing at a CAGR of 13.2%, in line with Statista’s 2023 report.

Furthermore, Nigeria accounts for about 27% of this market, with a robust payment services sector driven by mobile payments and digital wallets.

The Central Bank of Nigeria promotes financial inclusion and digital payments, attracting significant investments; for instance, Nigerian fintechs raised over $1.5 billion in 2021, according to TechCrunch, 2021 report.

With increasing access to digital financial services, Nigeria continues to play a crucial role in the African fintech landscape and is expected to expand further.

The above must have informed the position of Cynthia Alabi, a Revenue Growth Expert when airing her views at the Techeconomy Business Series.

Cynthia noted that Nigeria’s tech industry has been at the forefront of innovation and facilitating the realization of financial inclusion in Nigeria and Africa.

    In her words:

“In the last decade, during which I have been privileged to be in the tech industry, I have seen a lot of innovation in the industry. I will say that technology has driven a lot of things. For instance, in the payment space, we all know how cumbersome it was for us to move money and handle collections, especially with traditional banks. But having some fintechs come in, we have seen what can be done in space, and they have done a beautiful job in that regard, which has then given birth to a lot of players.

“I am proud of what we have achieved in terms of innovation, especially in the payments sector. One can say Nigeria has one of the best systems in terms of payment and innovation in the tech space. We are doing a lot more in terms of payment than many countries.

Especially in the payment and technology space, we have moved forward, and we are getting better. I have also seen innovation in other industries, like logistics. I remember when the some fintech came in, and we have seen others as well. Nigerian entrepreneurs are starting similar initiatives and making transportation much easier. Now we see the Lagos State Government starting LAGRIDE.

There are a lot of successful startups, and while many have yet to progress to the IPO stage, almost a billion or more is being generated by the likes of Moove, which is also doing great things in logistics and contributing to the economy. I think the startups in Nigeria have also helped in terms of employment, but we can do more, especially in terms of expansion. So I would say that we have companies like startups emerging; we have many of them, and they are coming up. I think we can do more, especially in terms of managing investments and ensuring that the growth we have achieved is sustained. I would also like to see software-as-a-service companies emerging in the startup space.

I believe that we are going to improve, and the reason for this is that while we are seeing more government support, we are also seeing individuals taking the bull by the horns. If we continue, I think a lot will happen in the future for Nigeria. We would reach a point where Nigeria would be referred to as a place of opportunities in technology. Some opportunities are already being tapped, and in the distant future, we will start seeing people reap the rewards of these opportunities.

Artificial Intelligence will be a game changer, and there is going to be a lot happening where tech companies will excel beyond traditional companies. I believe that is where we will see much innovation, with people creating more things that AI can do for them, making life easier and better for us as a country. Yes, the future of technology is bright in Nigeria, and in terms of game changers, I think Artificial Intelligence is worth looking out for.

Aside from business and innovation, especially for those from non-technical industries, I always mention in every space I speak that they should not think that because they are non-technical, they do not add any value to how Nigeria is growing or to the tech industry. There are many opportunities, but it may require learning more about the industry and products. You do not have to be a founder to start a business. If you find yourself in a situation where you need to build and contribute in the tech space, whatever field you are working in, you can easily transition into tech and add value.

While noting that Artificial Intelligence will set the pace for future innovation, Cynthia also predicted that the Nigerian tech industry is going to improve with government support. “Artificial Intelligence will be a game changer, and there will be a lot happening with tech companies compared to what we have seen with traditional companies.

I think there will also be much innovation as people create more things that AI can do for them, making life easier and better for us as a country. Yes, the future of technology is bright in Nigeria, and in terms of game changers, I think Artificial Intelligence is worth looking out for.

The reason for this is that while we are seeing the government becoming more supportive, we are also witnessing individuals taking the initiative. If we continue, I think a lot will happen in the future for Nigeria.

We will reach a point where Nigeria will be referred to as a place of opportunities in technology because there are opportunities already being tapped. In the distant future, we will start seeing people reap the rewards of these opportunities.”

  • Flutterwave, MTN Nigeria, and Bolt Top Media Engagement in Q3 2024 – Report

Flutterwave, MTN Nigeria, and Bolt Top Media Engagement in Q3 2024 – Report

Despite Nigeria’s prevailing economic difficulties, including heightened inflation and increasing operational costs, the fintech, telecommunications, and ride-hailing industries have maintained a robust media presence and public awareness footprint.

This sustained success is attributed to strategic media relations, effective marketing campaigns, and the impressive data shared with the media during Q3 2024, which collectively bolstered public perception and instilled confidence in these sectors.

An in-depth media performance analysis conducted by P+ Measurement Services, Nigeria’s leading media intelligence and PR audit agency, tracked and audited media coverage of these sectors across both online and print platforms.

The agency monitored over 1.3 million online publications—spanning blogs, branded publications, forums, and global news sources—alongside approximately 5,115 print publications, including daily, weekly, and monthly editions.

This comprehensive tracking enabled P+ Measurement Services to extract key PR metrics, such as sentiment analysis of reporters, editors, publishers, and opinion leaders, CEO performance assessments, spokesperson analysis, and overall topic prominence.

Key Insights from Q3 Media Performance Audit:

    Fintech Sector:
The audit examined eight fintech companies, highlighting their competitive dynamics through extensive media tracking.

Flutterwave emerged as the frontrunner, capturing a significant 42% share of total media coverage, largely driven by the expansion of its SEND App Remittance Service to 49 U.S. states.

This reflects Flutterwave’s strong media strategy, showcasing its influence and outreach. Following Flutterwave, Moniepoint attained a 29% share, propelled by its announcement of new security features to enhance customer protection.

Opay held 20% of the media share, supported by its introduction of a Night Guard feature, while Kuda trailed with a 9% share, indicating lower media engagement despite its growing customer base.

These results emphasize the competitive nature within the fintech sector, with Flutterwave’s proactive strategies setting the standard for media prominence.

    Telecommunications Sector:

In telecommunications, MTN Nigeria dominated, achieving a 49% share of media coverage, significantly driven by the extension of its tower lease agreements with IHS Nigeria until 2032.

This reinforced MTN’s position as a market leader with a consistent and strategic media approach. Globacom followed with a 21% share, its visibility amplified by its partnership with the Lagos State Government on the M-Agric Lottery Service, aimed at food sufficiency.

In contrast, Airtel Nigeria and 9mobile registered 15% each in media coverage, highlighting the disparity in media engagement. MTN’s consistent and dominant media profile underscores its established influence and proactive communications strategy.

    Ride-Hailing Sector:

Among the ride-hailing companies analyzed, Bolt Nigeria stood out, securing 51% of media exposure due to its proactive measures, such as introducing an optional verification feature for riders in Nigeria.

InDrive followed with 29%, driven by its celebration of achieving 5 billion deals, while Uber Nigeria secured 19%. Rida Nigeria lagged significantly with just 1% media visibility.

The variance in coverage reveals differing levels of media engagement and strategic media presence within the ride-hailing industry, with Bolt Nigeria clearly outperforming its competitors.

Comparative Analysis: Sector Disparities and Strategic Implications

The analysis draws attention to the concentration of media prominence within a select number of leading brands across the fintech, telecommunications, and ride-hailing sectors.

This trend highlights the critical role of strategic media management, where top brands such as Flutterwave, MTN Nigeria, and Bolt Nigeria have effectively leveraged media relations to sustain strong public profiles, reinforcing their market dominance and credibility.

The disparity in media engagement across sectors further emphasizes the varying levels of success in deploying tailored PR and communications strategies.

In a rapidly evolving digital landscape, maintaining consistent and strategic media visibility is crucial for brands seeking to remain competitive and relevant, especially within Nigeria’s dynamic business environment.

The partnerships focus on developing robust health information systems, implementing electronic medical records, and facilitating real-time data access and analyses.

The Vice President noted that partnering with state governments is a pivotal step in Interswitch’s mission to enhance healthcare delivery.

He said that the initiatives in Ogun and Lagos States are tailored to modernising healthcare infrastructure, reduce inefficiencies, and ultimately improve patient outcomes.

He was optimistic that through the collaborations, Interswitch e’Clat will establish a replicable model for other states and regions to follow.

The smart health information platform presented by Interswitch e’Clat is designed to address critical issues such as fragmented healthcare data, inefficient patient management systems, and the lack of coordinated care, all of which sum up the reality of our healthcare system.

This initiative by Interswitch e’Clat is not just a leap towards technological advancement, but a testament to its commitment to public healthcare.

In light of the foregoing, Interswitch e’Clat is revolutionizing the Nigerian healthcare sector, setting new standards in health information technology.

LASG Launches Ilera Eko Standard Jaara Health Insurance Plan

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Lagos state governor, has launched the Ilera Eko Standard Jaara Health Insurance scheme, offering annual plans ranging from N15,000 to N80,000.

The Lagos State government announced on its website after the launch ceremony on Tuesday.

The event also saw the commissioning of five Ilera Eko Virtual Booths to serve the informal sector, including market traders, artisans, and grassroots stakeholders.

The Ilera Eko Standard Jaara Health Insurance scheme is a comprehensive package incorporating Telemedicine, annual medical screenings, and specialized treatments in Cardiology, Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT), and Orthopedics, among others.

According to the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), this initiative highlights the ongoing efforts to improve healthcare accessibility.

“We are committed to continuing to introduce policies and reforms that ensure our residents have access to quality healthcare services.

“I urge everyone, especially those in the informal sector, to enroll in the ILERA EKO scheme to reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu detailed the structure for the Ilera Eko Standard Jaara Health Insurance Plan: N15,000 per individual annually, N55,000 for a family of four, and N80,000 for a family of six, with additional dependents below 23 years old paying N10,000 each per year.

“To enjoy the Standard Jaara Health Insurance Plan, an individual will pay a premium of N15,000 per annum. Payment of premium on our family plan has been stratified in line with the feedback received from our Enrollees.

While a family of four consisting of the father, mother, and two children below 23 years, will pay N55,000 per annum, a family of six, consisting of the father, mother, and four children also below 23 years, will pay N80,000 per annum.

The Governor highlighted the role of the informal sector, which comprises 70% of Lagos State’s population, urging them to take advantage of the new health initiatives.

He emphasized that his administration’s efforts, as outlined in the T.H.E.M.E.S+ Development Agenda, include enrolling all public servants in the ILERA EKO scheme with the government covering 75% of their premiums.

From August 2024, all Lagos State pensioners will receive free one-year ILERA EKO coverage.

“The focus of our administration, as outlined in the T.H.E.M.E.S + Development Agenda, includes improving health outcomes.”

“To this end, we have enrolled all public servants in the ILERA EKO scheme, with the government covering 75% of their premiums.”

“Starting in August 2024, all Lagos State pensioners will receive free one-year ILERA EKO coverage which will ensure their access to healthcare in retirement. We are doing all these to enhance our UHC goal.”

Sanwo-Olu also introduced five new ILERA EKO Virtual Booths in Yaba, Ketu Bus Stop, Adamo Market, Sabo Market, and Ayetoro Market in Epe.

According to the governor, these booths aim to bring healthcare services closer to the people, particularly market men and women, by providing first-line health services without the need for lengthy hospital visits.

“We have heavily subsidized the health insurance premium to ensure everyone can access healthcare. The Virtual Booths are designed to expand the reach of LASHMA’s health insurance scheme across the state,” Sanwo-Olu noted.

He also encouraged the formal sector to ensure their employees are registered under the scheme to reduce corporate medical expenses.

In his remarks, Mr. Adebayo Adedewe, the chairman of LASHMA’s Governing Council, announced that 300 Virtual Booths are planned to cater to grassroots needs.

Governor Sanwo-Olu announced that he signed an Executive Order to reinforce the new health initiatives, urging residents to embrace the Lagos State Health Scheme.

He warned that while the administration prefers enlightenment over enforcement, violators of the Lagos State Health Scheme (LSHS) Law and the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Act would face consequences.

Meanwhile, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu also approved the reintroduction of monthly environmental sanitation in the state.

The state Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, who disclosed this, noted that the State Executive Council has also given its approval for the introduction of the monthly exercise.

He, however, said the sanitation which would commence in July, would be officially announced by the governor soon.

“Lagos governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the state executive council have approved the re-introduction of the monthly sanitation.

“The governor will announce it officially for the exercise to commence this month,” Wahab, who spoke in Yoruba language, said in a 21-second clip shared on the Lagos State Environmental Update page on X.

The government stopped the monthly environmental sanitation exercise in the state in 2016.

The government said the exercise, which used to be held for three hours on the last Saturday of every month with restrictions on movement, needed to go to pave the way for a much-needed reform.

Mr. Steve Ayorinde, then Commissioner for Information and Strategy, in a statement, said the decision to cancel the monthly exercise followed a resolution adopted at the State Executive Council meeting.

“Lagos has grown exponentially with the attendant environmental problems associated with managing 20 million people. The environmental laws and procedures being practiced in the state have not been able to match the growth and the dream of a 24-hour economy,” Ayorinde had then said.

However, the reintroduction of the monthly environmental sanitation may not be unconnected to the recent flooding affecting some major parts of Lagos due to incessant rain.

Business and commercial activities were grounded on July 3, 2024, following a 10-hour downpour in many parts of Lagos and Ogun states.

The resulting flooding brought down a two-story building in the Mushin area of Lagos, grounded vehicular movement on the roads and overwhelmed thousands of residents while pupils could not attend schools in parts of the states.

Though the Lagos State Government said the rain lasted for nine hours, in some parts of the state, it started at midnight and did not subside until noon, making it 12 hours.

Such places include Berger, Ikeja, Ogba and in some parts, the rain lasted for 10 hours.

LASTMA Seizes 40 Vehicles to Tackle Illegal Garages, Ease Traffic Congestion

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has impounded 40 vehicles operating illegal garages in Oyingbo, Ijora, and Idumota to tackle traffic congestion.

The targeted areas are known for unauthorized parking and makeshift garages that obstruct traffic and pose risks to pedestrians.

Mr Taofiq Adebayo, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, said the operation is part of an initiative to restore order on Lagos roads and ensure a seamless transportation network.

Led by Mr. Kayode Odunuga, Head of Enforcement at LASTMA, and directed by Mr. Sola Giwa, Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, the situation aims to create a safer and more orderly environment for commuters and residents alike.

The impoundment exercise, which began recently, aligns with the newly unveiled Lagos State Transport Policy, focusing on regulating street and on-street parking through the Lagos State Parking Authority (LSPA).

This policy seeks to curb obstructive parking practices, thereby facilitating smoother traffic movement across primary and secondary roads and central business districts.

Authorities have pointed to the importance of adhering to traffic regulations to prevent disruptions caused by illegal garages and related activities. The Lagos State Government is focused on sustaining these efforts and extending them to other areas where similar issues are seen.

  • LASG Inks MoU with Interswitch for Development of Smart Health Information Platform “LAGSHIP”

LASG Inks MoU with Interswitch for Development of Smart Health Information Platform “LAGSHIP”

The Lagos State Government has officially signed a concession agreement with one of Africa’s leading integrated technology enablers, Interswitch, through its Healthtech subsidiary, Interswitch eClat, to develop and manage the Lagos Smart Health Information Platform (LAGSHIP).

Nigeria’s healthcare industry remains grossly underfunded with several other challenges, lacking a truly national/integrated framework for healthcare service delivery due to fragmentation among health stakeholders.

A recent report from Knight Frank estimates Nigeria would require about $82 billion of investment in health-care assets to reach the global average.

Healthcare institutions continue to struggle with daily operations due to a myriad of constraints and process inefficiencies.

The foregoing is the backdrop against which this latest public-private partnership milestone championed by the Lagos State Government is being launched with a view to positioning Lagos, Nigeria’s largest economic hub as a model for sub-nationals in strategic healthcare delivery interventions.

Babajide Olusola Sanwoolu, the governor of Lagos State, highlighted the significance of the Lagos State Smart Health Information Platform Project as one unprecedented in Nigeria till date.

    The Governor, in his remarks asserted that;

“The signing of the Concession Agreement between the Lagos State Government and Interswitch for the implementation of the Smart Health Information Platform (SHIP) is a ground-breaking development which signifies the start of a comprehensive technological overhaul in Lagos State’s health sector, aimed at enhancing residents’ access to healthcare services.”

Governor Sanwoolu further remarked that “I believe that this platform represents a significant and innovative approach to utilizing technology for accessing health information. It is poised to deliver numerous benefits and eliminate payment barriers, thereby encouraging citizens to actively engage with the process.”

Capitalizing on over 2 decades of experience and strategic expertise digitizing transactions and aggregating technology platforms across Africa, by virtue of this concession, Interswitch will support the State Government in securely leveraging data harnessed from electronic medical records deployed across all hospitals (public and private) and allied locations within the industry value chain, to create enhanced experiences for all stakeholders, from administrators to medical personnel, patients, as well as for better planning and policy-making, ultimately.

The strategic objective is to address gaps within the healthcare delivery system by creating an ecosystem that facilitates deeper connections between stakeholders and essentially addressing fragmentation by connecting patients to doctors, practices to public offices and patients to their medical data, thereby solving the operational problems of hospitals and healthcare providers through the robust over-arching technology infrastructure that LAGSHIP represents.

Commenting after the signing ceremony, which was jointly signed by the Honourable Commissioner for Health, Dr. Akin Abayomi and the Special Adviser to The Governor on Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), Mrs. Bukola Odoe, and witnessed by the Executive Governor and selected members of the Lagos State Executive Council at the State House, Marina, Mitchell Elegbe, the founder and group managing director/chief executive officer of Interswitch Group, remarked:

“22 years ago, we set out with a clear vision to solve social problems in Nigeria, starting by digitizing the use of cash, making it available to Nigerians just-in-time. Today, despite the incremental efforts of Interswitch and other players over the years, digital payments are estimated to be still less than 20% of total transactions in the economy.

This realization suggests that there is tremendous value, financial and otherwise, locked up in sectors and areas where government is a key player, particularly in the aspects of healthcare, transportation, and other basic social services. This vision we had from the outset underpinned our acquisition of eClat Healthcare 5 years ago, and initiatives such as Lagos-SHIP are unfolding strategic interventions along that transformational roadmap.

We are highly delighted that after a rigorous selection process, the Lagos State Government has deemed it fit to partner with us at the Interswitch Group on this epoch-making journey to digitize the healthcare system, uniting disparate elements into one holistic platform that creates value and enhances the experience of all stakeholders, just like we’ve done in the sphere of financial services, leveraging technology.”

Also speaking at the signing ceremony, Dr. Wallace Ogufere, the managing director for Interswitch eClat, Interswitch’s Healthtech Venture, opined that the Lagos State Government’s pioneering initiative in the form of LAGSHIP is significant in terms of advancing the outlook for Healthcare Management and Administration in a frontier-market such as Nigeria, and moving closer to what obtains in developed economies.

In his words “The go-live of the Lagos Smart Health Information Platform will significantly close many identified gaps in electronic medical records management, essentially addressing long-standing constraints including process inefficiencies, limited transparency and inadequacy of necessary tools and supplies, among other challenges.”

This partnership between the Lagos State Government and Interswitch represents a unique model for public-private partnership in the healthcare delivery space, and one which is expected to be a veritable reference point for national and sub-national governments in Africa going forward.
