The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is taking a significant step towards fostering a thriving commodity-trading ecosystem in Nigeria by organizing a workshop that will provide a platform for selected players in the Commodities Trading Ecosystem, the Capital Market, and other relevant industry members to engage with mining companies.
The workshop aims to discuss opportunities for accessing long-term funding in the Nigerian Capital Market, in alignment with the implementation of the capital market master plan.
The capital market master plan recognizes commodities exchanges as critical in enabling investment diversification, risk management, price discovery, and transactional efficiency.
As part of the strategic implementation of this master plan, the SEC is organizing the workshop titled “Financing the Solid Minerals Sector through the Capital Market and the critical role of the Commodities Exchanges,” scheduled to be held on the 27th and 28th of July, 2023.
The workshop will take place at the Securities and Exchange Commission Lagos Zonal Office, located at 3 Idejo Street, Off Adeola Odeku Street, Victoria Island, Lagos.
Collaborating with the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, the SEC aims to enlighten capital market operators on the significant role of the Mining industry and how it can integrate players in the solid minerals extractive industry into the commodities trading ecosystem. The workshop’s primary target audience is selected Mining Companies in Nigeria.
Mr. Lamido Yuguda, the Director-General of the SEC, emphasized the importance of Commodities Exchanges in job creation and economic development. He stated that these exchanges play a crucial role in enabling investment diversification, risk management, price discovery, and transactional efficiency.
Furthermore, Commodities Exchanges have the potential to efficiently link commodities to industries, unlocking the economic potentials of farming communities, promoting rural development, enhancing financial inclusion of smallholder farmers, and ultimately facilitating overall economic growth.
The SEC encourages all relevant stakeholders to participate actively in this workshop, as it marks a significant milestone in strengthening the capital market’s foundation and fostering a dynamic commodity-trading ecosystem in Nigeria.
