Showmax is cooking something huge as it unveils an extensive content slate in anticipation of its February 2024 relaunch.
This comes on the heels of a partnership between MultiChoice and global media heavyweight Comcast’s NBCUniversal and Sky.
The highly-anticipated relaunch promises an entirely new Showmax experience, featuring a revamped app, brand-new aesthetics, and a diverse product suite. Showmax is gearing up to release 21 Showmax Originals from four African countries, including an impressive lineup of five Nigerian Originals.
Leading this in the Nigerian content slate is the epic drama series “Cheta’m,” directed by the acclaimed James Omokwe. Additionally, viewers can expect a reality TV series titled “Sadau Sisters,” featuring the talented Nigerian actress Rahama Sadau and her three sisters. The content offering extends to a captivating documentary series “Freemen,” a romantic comedy movie “The Counsellor,” and the return of the hit drama series “Flawsome.”
South African Originals also take centre stage, with adaptations of bestsellers like Angela Makholwa’s thriller “Red Ink” and “Catch Me A Killer,” the memoir of Micki Pistorius, South Africa’s first serial killer profiler. The lineup includes a spectrum of genres, such as high school drama “Youngins,” university drama “Wyfie,” crime drama “Koek,” comedy “Ekhaya Backpackers,” and films like “Forever Yena,” “Intlawulo,” and “Matilda en Matthys.”
Showmax caters to reality TV enthusiasts with South African shows like “Widows Unveiled,” “Chocolate Kings” exploring male exotic dancers, and returning seasons of “The Mommy Club” and “The Real Housewives of Durban.” Kenyan and Ghanaian audiences are in for a treat with new seasons of “Single Kiasi” and “ENO,” respectively.
Notably, the entertainment giant secures a competitive edge with its phenomenal international content lineup from renowned entertainment brands such as Universal Pictures, NBC, Peacock, Sky, DreamWorks Animation, HBO, Warner Bros., Discovery, Paramount, Sony, and more. Viewers can anticipate a surge in international titles, including blockbuster hits like “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning,” “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse,” “Halo” Season 2, and “Lawman: Bass Reeves.”
The migration of Showmax onto the global Peacock streaming platform enhances the viewing experience, offering international content like “Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning” and “Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse” in HD with Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Showmax’s affiliation with Peacock, a leading sports streaming platform, positions it for rapid scalability.
Showmax CEO Marc Jury is enthusiastic about the noteworthy developments. He stated, “2024 is a big year for Showmax. We will be kicking it off with a content slate packed with world-class entertainment from the world’s biggest brands plus more African Originals than ever before and the first-ever mobile Premier League plan for Africa.”
