The choice of courses by Nigeria’s highest-scoring candidates in the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) has revealed a strong preference for technology, engineering, and innovation-driven disciplines, highlighting shifting academic and career interests among the country’s brightest students.

Techeconomy analyzed data released by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) which shows that most of the top-performing candidates selected programmes linked to computer science, software engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, mechanical engineering, and mechatronics engineering.

Out of the top nine candidates listed, six chose technology and engineering-related courses, while three opted for medicine and computer science-related programmes.

Miss Owoeye Daniella Jesudunsin from Ekiti State, who emerged the overall highest scorer with 372, selected MBBS at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) as her first choice institution.

However, the broader trend among the top scorers points to growing interest in Nigeria’s digital economy and emerging technologies.

Enwere Kingsley Ikenna from Imo State, who scored 370, chose Computer Science at Nile University of Nigeria, while Bamisile Ayomide Emmanuel from Ondo State, with 369, selected Software Engineering at the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA).

Similarly, Olabiyisi Olanrewaju Oluwatimileyin from Oyo State, who scored 368, opted for Mechatronics Engineering at Pan-Atlantic University.

Other top candidates also leaned heavily toward engineering and computing disciplines. Victor-Onyeka Daniel Ifeanyi from Imo State selected Electrical/Electronic Engineering at the University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), while Osagiobare Daniel Osahenrumwen from Edo State chose Mechanical Engineering at the University of Benin (UNIBEN).

Ademiluyi Adebowale Anthony from Osun State picked Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), while Azuike Kenechukwu Anthony from Anambra State selected Software Engineering at Afe Babalola University (ABUAD).

Candidates ranked ninth also reflected similar preferences. Offorkile Michael Okechukwu from Abia State and Adebisi Eniola Sonari from Ogun State both chose Computer Science at the University of Ibadan and Covenant University respectively, while Umukoro Gift Oghenevovwero from Delta State selected Electrical/Electronic Engineering at Pan-Atlantic University.

Analysts believe the trend reflects increasing awareness among Nigerian youths about opportunities in artificial intelligence, software development, robotics, cybersecurity, automation, and digital infrastructure.

The dominance of STEM-related courses among the highest scorers also aligns with ongoing government and private-sector investments in Nigeria’s technology ecosystem, which continues to create demand for highly skilled digital talent.

Interestingly, private universities featured prominently among the preferred institutions of the top candidates, with Nile University, Pan-Atlantic University, Covenant University, and ABUAD attracting some of the country’s best-performing students.

Education stakeholders believe the development signals growing confidence in private tertiary institutions, particularly in technology-focused education and industry-driven learning models.

The 2026 UTME results have continued to generate nationwide conversations around academic excellence, digital skills development, and the future workforce needed to power Nigeria’s innovation economy.

  • Remita has commenced the sale of the 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) ePINs to prospective candidates seeking admission into higher institutions across Nigeria.

As recently announced by the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB), the sale of ePINs for 2023 UTME registrations commenced on Saturday, January 14, and ends on Tuesday, February 14, while the Direct Entry (DE) forms will commence on Monday, February 20 and end Thursday 20 April, 2023.

Prospective candidates are to register with their National Identification Number (NIN) by typing the word ‘NIN’, then space, adding their 11-digit NIN and sending as an SMS to 55019, e.g (NIN 00123456789).

They would receive an SMS with a 10-digit profile code via the phone number that should be used to purchase their ePINs.

They are then to proceed to the Remita website (remita.net/jamb) and follow the instructions. Once payment is completed, the ePIN will be delivered to the candidate’s registered phone number and also displayed on their Remita receipt.

Chinedu Alisa, Retail Manager at Remita, said agents, schools, and other partnering organisations across Nigeria who resell JAMB ePINs will be duly rewarded with the most competitive commissions per transaction.

Candidates can make payments using any of the available multiple payment options on Remita including debit or credit card, USSD, eNaira, mobile wallet, bank account, bank transfer, internet banking or at any Remita Agent location. They can also walk into any bank and request to buy their ePINs with Remita.

Intending candidates can also pay through Remita on JAMB’s e-facility portal. This indicates that the Remita platform is designed to simplify the registration process and eliminate any inconvenience candidates may face during their JAMB registration.

“Candidates of the 2023 UTME will enjoy a smooth registration process when they buy their ePINs on the Remita platform, either via the web or with their mobile phones.

“Agents stand a chance to make up to N200 per ePIN sold via Remita, and will get a refund for unsold ePINs” he added.

Remita is a payment solution in Nigeria that empowers individuals and businesses to do more, through simplified payments of all kinds.

Class54, a Lagos-based startup has unveiled tools that leverage artificial intelligence, AI to drive success rates for students preparing to write Nigeria university entry examination, the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

Launched earlier this year, Class54’s mobile and web applications allow K-12 students prepare adequately for examinations by using artificial intelligence (AI) to analyse their areas of weaknesses and suggests the proper steps to take to improve.

On the Class54 platform, available for AndroidiOS and Windows desktop users, students can practice up to four subjects simultaneously, just like in the actual examination; see a robust and precise analysis of their performance and practice latest past questions up to 2022 JAMB and WAEC examinations.

Students can also access the summary of recommended novels, practice questions by their preferred topics or practice questions by how hard or easy they prefer it to be.

Instructions on each subject are presented with detailed explanation to every question, complete with clearly labelled diagrams. To boost adoption among target users across Nigeria, the applications have been optimized to work even with limited internet access.

In a statement, the promoters of the platform, Class54 Education Limited said the solution has become imperative in the face of increased lagging performance of candidates of the JAMB UTME in recent times, with barely 2% of the candidates scoring above 200 in the 2022 UTME exams conducted recently.

They said Class54 would successfully drive pass rate in UTME to 73.54%, up from the 21% national average as has been demonstrated in its first year of operation, thereby boosting admission rate into universities appreciably.

With access to the application remaining free for the first five questions in a subject year and full access at N1,500 for three months, an amount that is significantly cheaper compared to the cost of the printed past questions, Class54, it said, can become the best companion for everyone writing major examinations in Nigeria.

Speaking on the solution, Oluwasegun Ige, Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer said, “We have built an amazing technology based on artificial intelligence which helps students improve their grades in a record time as they prepare for major examinations in Nigeria.

“Our technology tracks their progress and recommends the next-best action to take to get the best grades in their examinations. This has enabled us to raise the average pass rate for candidates who used the class54 App in the 2022 JAMB examination to 73.54%, up from the 21% national average just in our first year alone.”

Teesas Learning Centre has recorded a 97% pass rate in this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

The center reported the impressive pass rate despite only about 24% of almost two million students who sat for the UTME conducted by the Joint Admissions Matriculation Board (JAMB) scored above 200.

Christina Smit, who graduated from secondary school in 2021 and had sat for UTME,  previously almost resigned to fate that perhaps she was not destined to school in Nigeria until she encountered the learning centre. She scored 255.

Another student, Treasure David, said, “The weekly CBT assessment tests at the Teesas were a game changer. Many of the questions I encountered in JAMB were covered at the Teesas Learning Centre. Scoring 321 in JAMB wouldn’t have been possible without Teesas.”

Ochuole Ogar, who scored 284, said physics used to be very difficult before she joined Teesas.

“The classes were conversational and engaging, which helped me excel in my exams. One time, I arrived late to class, and the tutor gave me a full revision of what was taught. That dedication made all the difference,” she said.

Teesas Education has technology-enabled hybrid learning centres in Lekki and Ikeja.

The learning centres offer real-time computer-based WAEC, UTME and post-UTME practise tests and mock trials that can be accessed online and offline via its eponymous mobile and web app, Teesas Education App which is available on the iOS and Google stores.

The Matric service, which is available on the Teesas Education App, gives candidates access to a compilation of 40 years of UTME and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) practice test questions, and answers and tutorial videos based on the likeliest topics from previous years.

On a busy morning at a registration centre in Lagos, a group of young candidates waited patiently to complete their registration for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination.

For many of them, the process was simple: buy the e-PIN, sit before a computer, and hope that the journey to the university had begun.

But behind the screens and biometric scanners, another conversation was unfolding among the operators who run the Computer-Based Test centres.

    Many of them were unhappy.

Their concern centred on a ₦700 registration service charge attached to each candidate’s registration, a fee collected by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board on behalf of CBT centres.

Some operators argue that the amount is no longer realistic in today’s economic climate, citing rising costs of electricity, internet connectivity, and equipment maintenance.

Their complaints surfaced even as the examination body announced that it had remitted about ₦1.57 billion to accredited CBT centres that participated in the 2026 UTME registration exercise.

The payment represents the ₦700 charge collected from candidates during registration and subsequently paid to the centres.

For the operators, however, the figures tell only part of the story.

Running a CBT centre in Nigeria today, they say, involves far more than installing computers. It means powering generators during long electricity outages, paying for high-speed internet connections, maintaining hardware, and hiring trained staff to handle thousands of candidates.

“Everything has gone up, diesel, internet, maintenance,” one operator reportedly lamented, insisting that the ₦700 fee no longer reflects the actual cost of delivering the service.

The fee structure itself is not new. The ₦700 charge is part of the UTME registration components, which include the application fee, examination fee, and other charges associated with the process.

The board collects these payments centrally and remits the appropriate portion to CBT centres to discourage multiple payments and prevent the exploitation of candidates.

The policy was introduced partly to address past complaints of overcharging by some centres, creating a more transparent and cashless registration system.

Yet the latest debate highlights the delicate balance between protecting candidates from excessive fees and ensuring that CBT centres, which provide the technological backbone for the examination, remain financially viable.

For millions of Nigerian students, the UTME remains the gateway to higher education. Behind that gateway, however, lies a growing conversation about cost, sustainability, and the future of the digital examination infrastructure supporting one of the country’s most important academic processes.

Teesas Education has announced an expansion of its JAMB tutorial programme with the opening of two new learning centres, reinforcing its commitment to improving students’ performance in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

The newly launched centres are in Ikota along the Lekki axis of Lagos State and at ICAPS on Egbu Road in Owerri, Imo State.

This expansion brings Teesas Education’s total number of JAMB tutorial centres to four, strengthening its footprint and enabling the edTech company to reach more students across Nigeria.

Osayi Izedonmwen, Chairman and Founder, Teesas Education, described the expansion as a continuation of the company’s mission to improve UTME performance nationwide.

“Over the past few years, we have been immensely concerned about the consistently low pass rates in the UTME. Our journey began with a simple question: why were so many bright students underperforming? Through extensive research, we discovered that most students were relying on multiple, inconsistent preparation materials that left critical gaps in their understanding. That insight spurred us to build a unified system, one that combines structured teaching, technology-enabled practice, and data-driven feedback.

We tested our model for the UTME tutorial classes in 2024, and it yielded a 97 per cent pass rate. That success gave us the confidence to roll out the UTME preparation programme fully.

By 2025, our students achieved a 98 per cent pass rate, proving that when you give students the right tools, they can achieve phenomenal results.

This expansion is in continuation of our mission to close the learning gap and ensure that every student, regardless of background or location, has a real chance to excel in the UTME.”

To ensure accessibility for all students, Teesas Education also offers virtual learning options. Students who are unable to attend physical classes can join the JAMB classes online, gaining access to the same expert tutors, weekly assessments, and structured learning system available at physical centres.

This hybrid approach allows Teesas Education to support students across different locations in Nigeria.

A key feature of Teesas Learning Centres is the mandatory pre-assessment test for all new students, followed by weekly computer-based mock exams designed to track progress and strengthen exam readiness.

Sixteen-year-old Osemudiamen Ahabue, one of Teesas’ standout performers in the 2025 UTME, shared his experience.

He explained that Teesas covered the syllabus quickly, helping him identify his weak spots and prompting him to revisit those topics and study them harder.

In addition, the mock tests that closely simulated the UTME environment gave him a vivid understanding of what to expect on exam day and boosted his confidence.

Another student, Araoluwa David Ashiru, a sixteen-year-old student of Whitesands School, who scored 349 in the last UTME, described the Teesas approach as “an almost foolproof way to score above 300 in JAMB.”

“Teesas helped me achieve 349 by teaching me time management and covering a huge syllabus in a short period. The CBTs were very thorough, and after the tests, I would review the areas in which I performed poorly and study them more thoroughly. If you want to score above 300, come to Teesas,” he said.

As part of its commitment to improving exam readiness, Teesas Education also offers its Matric service,  a comprehensive digital resource that gives students access to 40 years of past JAMB questions.

The platform enables learners to practise extensively, identify patterns, and build confidence through repeated exposure to real exam formats.

This service complements both the physical and virtual classes, ensuring continuous learning and revision.

With its expanded network of learning centres, robust digital tools, virtual learning options, and a proven track record of high performance, Teesas Education continues to position itself as a leading force in transforming exam preparation and improving learning outcomes for Nigerian students.

Delivering the opening remarks, Dr. Dara Akala, international development expert and former executive director of the PIND Foundation, emphasized that while Nigeria has made strides in digitalization, challenges remain in education.

“Connectivity gaps, rising telecom costs, and weak ICT infrastructure risk excluding millions of students, especially in rural and underserved communities. This transition must be fair and inclusive,” he said.

The keynote address was delivered by Chief Osita Chidoka, former minister of Aviation and Chancellor of the Athena Centre for Policy and Leadership, who championed Nigeria’s digital readiness.

He cited JAMB’s CBT success as proof that large-scale digital reforms are possible.

“Over the last decade, Nigeria has undergone a silent digital revolution, from banking to voter registration. The key question is: can we deliver fair, accessible, glitch-free digital examinations for every Nigerian child? The answer depends on political will and sustained innovation,” Chidoka asserted.

Chidoka also shared his experience digitizing processes at the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), including accident reporting, e-ticketing, and staff promotion exams, stressing that digital systems thrive when backed by leadership and infrastructure.

Also speaking, Dr. Fidelis Ekom, co-founder and Managing Partner of DIniti8tive, reiterated the group’s commitment to advocacy and collaboration.

“Today we interrogated a subject that touches the core of educational equity in Nigeria, connectivity and the cost and integrity of national examinations. Together, we’ve examined the realities: the infrastructure gaps, the economic and social toll of exam-day glitches, and the risk of leaving millions of children behind as we transition to full CBT systems.

“Nigeria does not need to disrupt existing systems like JAMB and WAEC. We must expand their capacity, reinforce their integrity, and ensure inclusivity. Every child deserves a fair chance to prove their potential, no matter where they live.

“But more importantly, we have spotlighted solutions: Strengthening connectivity and infrastructure to reach underserved communities; leveraging technology and EdTech innovations that are low-cost, inclusive, and scalable; ensuring shared accountability frameworks where exam bodies, parents, students, and schools co-create solutions, and fostering bold partnerships across government, private sector, and civil society that can truly move us from plans to performance,” Ekom said.

Stakeholders, including representatives from WAEC, NANS, NAPTAN, NAPPS, parents, legal experts, and EdTech innovators, contributed to the discussions, underscoring the need for public-private partnerships to strengthen exam systems.

As next steps, DIniti8tive announced plans to produce a post-event policy brief, share digital advocacy tools, and launch pilot projects that improve exam connectivity, fairness, and reliability ahead of the 2026 CBT deadline.

Technology Company, Globacom, has stated that its recently unveiled Examination Preparatory Service was designed to empower students to excel in Computer-Based Examinations (CBT), providing them with the tools and resources needed to achieve academic success.

Recall, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), last Monday released the results of the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UMTE), raising concerns about mass failure as more than 1.5 million out of 1.9 million candidates whose results were released scored below 200.

The UTME is graded over 400, with each candidate assessed in four subjects scored over 100 marks each.

A breakdown of the results released by JAMB on Monday showed that 983,187 candidates (50.29%) scored between 160 and 199, while 488,197 candidates (24.97%) scored between 140 and 159.

    Additionally, 57,419 candidates (2.94%) scored between 120 and 139.

However, Glo, in a statement in Lagos over the weekend, highlighted the benefits of its Examination Preparatory Service, including innovative solutions designed to help students excel in examination such as JAMB, WAEC, and IELTS, adding that it would help reverse poor performance of students in CBT exams such as the one witnessed in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
