When Apple launched the MacBook Neo earlier in March, the reaction was mixed.

Some loyal users had anticipated a new device following the iPhone 17e launch, but few expected Apple to step into the mid-range laptop segment.

Both the specifications and the pricing caught the industry off guard.

For a company known for premium devices and equally premium price tags, the MacBook Neo reveals a big transition.

This is not just another MacBook release, it is Apple taking aim at Windows laptops, which have dominated the mid-range category for years.

With more competitive specs and a lower entry price than traditional MacBooks, what does this new strategy mean for the larger mid-range laptop market, and should other established brands like HP, Acer and Lenovo be concerned?

Will Affordable Windows Laptops Still Dominate?

It is unlikely that the MacBook Neo will displace Windows laptops anytime soon. However, this new move by Apple is heavy enough to disrupt the status quo and apply pressure on competitors.

This shows that Apple is no longer satisfied with leading only the premium tier market. It is now targeting a wider audience, including users in cost-sensitive and emerging markets. Still, some challenges could limit how far the MacBook goes.

Price Still Matters A Lot

While the MacBook Neo is Apple’s most affordable laptop yet, it still sits above many entry-level and mid-range Windows machines in terms of pricing.

In markets like Nigeria, where affordability is most important in purchasing decisions, that gap matters. For many buyers, even a moderate price difference can determine which device they choose. If Apple intends to gain traction in these regions, pricing will be an important area of focus.

Ecosystem Appeal Has Limits

Apple’s ecosystem is widely regarded as one of its strongest advantages, providing seamless integration across devices. But that appeal does not always mean sales in more price-sensitive markets.

Many users still prioritise Windows’s flexibility and broad software compatibility, especially in schools or workplaces. For these buyers, the operating system is just as important as the hardware itself.

Variety and Market Competition Remain

The Windows ecosystem benefits from variety, with dozens of manufacturers producing laptops across different price points, designs and performance levels.

This diversity allows buyers to choose devices tailored to their specific needs, something Apple, with a more limited product line-up, cannot fully replicate.

This flexibility gives Windows an edge in the mid-range market.

Component Shortages & Supply Constraints

If demand for the MacBook Neo increases quickly, Apple may face challenges scaling production and distribution to match the reach of established PC makers.

Windows laptop manufacturing already operates extensive supply chains and distribution networks, particularly in emerging markets. Apple, by comparison, may need time to build similar depth in these regions.

The MacBook Neo has stirred conversion and interest, bringing more competition into a segment long controlled by Windows laptops, but it is not a guaranteed game-changer.

Windows are likely to maintain their top place in the mid-range market, driven by affordability, flexibility and availability. Still, Apple’s entry raises the stakes.

Even if it does not overturn the market, it will push competitors to innovate faster, and that could transform the space over time.

After the launch of the iPhone 17e, Apple’s cheapest model from the 17 series, consumers anticipated a cheaper variant in the MacBook line, and it happened.

Apple just released the latest addition to the MacBook family; the MacBook Neo, which is their most affordable MacBook yet.

Announced today, March 4th, and available for immediate pre-order, the MacBook Neo starts at $599 or N570,000/N620,000 and brings Apple’s unique experience closer to price-sensitive consumers globally.

The main purpose behind the release of this machine is to create a budget-friendly alternative to premium MacBook models, and targets users who are interested in the reliable and aesthetic ecosystem of MacOS, without the high price.

What Makes it Unique

Aside from being a completely different addition to the MacBook family, the MacBook Neo comes with several perks that make it quite different from the others.

Our first observation was the difference in the chipset. Unlike the other MacBook models that rely on Apple’s powerful “M-series” silicon chips, the MacBook Neo version is powered by the A18 Pro chip, which was originally designed for iPhones.

This allows for impressive performance when it comes to daily tasks such as web browsing, streaming, some editing, and AI-assisted applications while keeping the energy consumption and price lower.

Apple also intelligently emphasised design and ecosystem features, such as tighter integration with iPhones and productivity tools. This sets it apart from other models in the MacBook family.

Specifications

Here is a complete breakdown of all the features announced by Apple during the rollout:

  • Processor: Apple A18 Pro chip (6-core CPU, 5-core GPU)
  • Display: 13-inch Liquid Retina (2408 × 1506), up to 500 nits brightness, 1 billion colours
  • Memory: 8 GB unified memory
  • Storage: 256 GB or 512 GB SSD
  • Battery: Up to 16 hours of battery life
  • Webcam: 1080p FaceTime HD camera
  • Audio: Dual side-firing speakers with spatial audio support
  • Keyboard & Controls: Magic Keyboard with large Multi-Touch trackpad
  • Ports: 2 USB-C, headphone jack
  • Wireless: Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 6
  • Colours: Silver, Indigo, Blush, Citrus
  • Operating System: macOS Tahoe
  • Pricing: Starts at $599; education pricing starts from $499
  • Availability: Pre-orders open. Shipments begin March 11, 2026

Note that the Touch ID fingerprint sensor is a feature only on the 512 GB storage model, not on the base configuration.

Although the launch of the MacBook Neo is part of Apple’s new strategy to make its core devices more accessible to a wider audience, Apple still made some trade-offs to keep costs down.

The most prominent of them is the chipset power. Although the A18 Pro chip is still quite enough for everyday tasks, it is still far behind the main M series silicone chips, designed primarily for MacBooks.

The A18 silicone chip, which was originally made for iPhones, can not match the M series when it comes to heavy tasks like video editing, coding, and heavy software usage.

Aside from the power difference, the MacBook Neo also comes with 8GB RAM, which is okay but can not be upgraded by users.

Also, you need to get the higher storage configuration to get the Touch ID feature.

For Tech users in Nigeria, the MacBook Neo could be a gateway to access the Apple ecosystem at a more accessible price that is comparable to mid-range Windows laptops. Although high import duties might make it more costly compared to abroad.

Altogether, the Neo is still a good choice for students, professionals, content creators and small business owners who want a laptop with strong battery life, reliable performance for everyday tasks and good support for productivity apps and iPhones. A popular category in the Nigerian market.
