Africa’s Business Heroes (ABH) Prize Competition, sponsored by the Jack Ma Foundation and Alibaba Philanthropy, has announced the top 50 finalists for its 2023 edition.

With a record-breaking 27, 267 applications, this year’s competition demonstrates the flourishing entrepreneurial spirit in Africa.

The ABH competition received applications from all 54 African countries, with West Africa leading the way, accounting for 43% of the total submissions. Notably, Francophone countries saw the highest participation in ABH’s history, comprising 27% of all applications.

After rigorous evaluation by 256 judges from over 40 countries, the top 50 finalists were selected from 20 countries across 13 industries, with agriculture, education and training, and healthcare taking the lead. The average age of the finalists is 36, with 38% being female and 62% male.

Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt, and South Africa boast the highest number of top 50 candidates. Additionally, for the first time, Sierra Leone is represented among the top 50, showcasing the competition’s increasing reach across Africa. Currently, the top 50 finalists represent entrepreneurs from 33 out of 54 African countries. The next phase involves a panel of over 50 round-two judges conducting interviews to select the top 20.

Jason Pau, Executive Director of International Programs at the Jack Ma Foundation, expressed gratitude to the entrepreneurs and judges, highlighting the incredible potential and talent demonstrated by the top 50 finalists. Pau emphasized the forthcoming surprises and encouraged supporters to stay connected and follow ABH closely.

As part of their journey, all top 50 finalists will participate in the Alibaba Netpreneur Masterclass Global Edition 2023. This online program, conducted by Alibaba Global Initiatives (AGI) from late July to late August, will provide valuable insights into leveraging digital technology for business growth.

The announcement of the top 20 finalists will take place in July, followed by the unveiling of the top 10 finalists in September. The highly anticipated Grand Finale and Summit, where the top 10 candidates will pitch to global business legends for the final award, is scheduled for November 23-24, 2023, in Kigali, Rwanda.

ABH aims to showcase outstanding participants through traditional and social media channels. The ABH Show, featuring the entrepreneurial journeys of the top 10 finalists from the previous edition, has already released its first episode, providing valuable exposure and insights.

As ABH celebrates its five-year milestone, it will publish a comprehensive fifth-anniversary impact report highlighting the growth and influence of the prize competition on African entrepreneurs. The report will recognize the applicants, winners, and stakeholders who have played integral roles in the competition’s success.
