In an exploration of the intersection between Africa’s creative industries and the ever-advancing field of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the 11th edition of the annual Innovention Lecture Series, hosted by Verdant Zeal Group, dissected the theme: “The Future of Africa’s Creative Industries in the Era of Artificial Intelligence.”
The Convener of Innovention Series 11, Dr. Tunji Olugbodi, EVC of Verdant Zeal Group, welcomed attendees by highlighting the potentials of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in shaping the future of Africa’s creative industries.
Dr. Olugbodi acknowledged the impact of digital disruption on the global creative ecosystem, highlighting AI as a key technological advancement. “AI is not just a tool; it is a catalyst for democratizing creativity,” he emphasized. He painted a vivid picture of AI’s role in levelling the playing field for professionals, making creative tools accessible to a broader spectrum of talents, particularly in Africa.
“AI can enhance creativity, increase efficiency, and unlock new opportunities for filmmakers, musicians, designers, and storytellers,” Dr. Olugbodi asserted, underlining how AI-powered software and platforms enable artists in remote African regions to manifest their visions.
Reiterating its ability to assist in content creation, generate music, art, and stories, and facilitate collaboration, Dr. Olugbodi stressed the essential role of AI in preserving Africa’s rich cultural heritage, envisioning AI’s assistance in digitizing cultural artifacts and abstracts.
“We must remember the preciousness of Africa’s cultural heritage and acknowledge AI’s role in conserving and showcasing it,” he urged, pointing out the importance of maintaining authenticity and uniqueness as AI becomes integral to the African creative process.
Dr. Olugbodi did not fail to acknowledge the challenges ahead, bringing to the fore the need to navigate the implications of AI in creative industries carefully. He highlighted the importance of respecting copyright, ultra-sensitivity, privacy, and investing in education and training for African creators to leverage AI effectively.
“Collaborative action is paramount,” Dr. Olugbodi asserted, calling for the joint efforts of governments, educational institutions, businesses, and creative professionals. He envisioned a future where AI empowers humans to reach new creative heights, tell compelling stories, and preserve cultural heritage.
Dr. Olugbodi painted a hopeful vision of the future. “The future of African creative industry is not a battle between AI and humans; it’s a harmonious collaboration,” he stated. He urged the audience to harness the transformative power of AI, ensuring that Africa’s creative spirit continues to evolve and shine on the global stage.
In a Keynote Speech by Dr. David Abodunrin, Principal Partner, Cubed Integrated Management Consulting, shed light on Africa’s vast resources and the continent’s untapped potential.
He emphasized the unique minerals found exclusively in Africa, highlighting the extent to which they positively impact the global industrial landscape if well utilized.
He challenged the audience to ponder on the disparity between Africa’s wealth of resources and its current industrialization status.
“Africa has no business being less industrialized,” he asserted, noting the missed opportunities during the previous industrial revolutions and the urgent need to catch up with the upcoming fourth industrial revolution driven by AI technologies.
Dr. Abodunrin presented the audience with a commendable vision of Africa’s role in the AI-powered future. He delineated the significance of the Big Five in the AI landscape: Internet of Things, Big Data, interconnectedness, cybersecurity, and his personal favorite, AI. He stressed the urgency for Africa to embrace these technologies and bridge the gap with the rest of the world.
“We are in a generation where man, machine, and animals will walk together,” he declared, painting a vivid picture of a future where human capabilities are amplified by AI technologies. He touched upon the integration of AI in various fields, from crime prevention to artistic creativity.
Dr. Abodunrin dissected the concepts of innovation and invention, emphasizing their roles in creative industries. He illustrated how innovation is the marriage of invention and distribution, creating a multiplication factor that propels creativity forward. He challenged African creatives to explore these intersections, ensuring that financial power aligns with creative endeavors.
“At the end of the day, creativity thrives at the intersection of production, distribution, and technology,” he remarked, emphasizing the role of AI in amplifying creative outputs and reaching broader audiences.
The keynote address concluded with a thought-provoking insight: “Creativity lies at the desperate edge of control and chaos.”
Dr. Abodunrin explained how AI could help navigate this edge, enabling faster learning, shorter response times, and broader audience outreach. Africa holds the power to rewrite its narrative through creative leverage of AI technologies.
