Xiaomi 17

The Mobile World Congress began its 2026 edition on Monday, March 2, 2026, an annual global event that provides a platform for tech brands to show their latest innovations and products.

One of the stories that caught attention in this year’s edition is Xiaomi’s partnership with Leica through the Xiaomi 17 series.

Although this Xiaomi series debuted first in China as of December last year, Xiaomi has teamed up again with Leica to create a smartphone that is photography-focused while delivering all round flagship performance.

This is not the first time Xiaomi has had a partnership with Leica on their flagship models. According to Xiaomi via their official website, this current partnership marked Leica’s 100-year anniversary.

“Marking the 100-year anniversary of Leica, the company partnered with Xiaomi to bring its iconic heritage and design philosophy to a cutting-edge mobile device.”

The latest partnership is also aimed at strengthening the already existing relationship between the two tech brands. It goes beyond marketing to mean a more strategic co-creation model that includes jointly optimized hardware and software for better photography performance.

Features and Pricing of the Xiaomi 17 Ultra

The 17 series, especially the 17 Ultra, offers more than just the camera. This flagship co-partnership device also comes with amazing specs that make it highly competitive among other high-end phone brands like Samsung and Apple.

In some areas like battery size, it even surpasses the S26 series, which was announced in the recently concluded Galaxy Unpacked event.

Aside from the 3 lens camera Setup which consists of a 1 inch 50-megapixel camera sensor with a f/1.67 lens, a telephoto setup with a 200MP 1/1.4-inch sensor, a 50MP ultrawide camera, and a manual zoom ring around the camera, other attractive features are:

  • Memory: 12GB and 16GB variants
  • Storage: 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB variants
  • Processor: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 (3 nm)
  • Battery: 6000 mAh large battery life
  • Charging: 100W wired, 50W wireless, 22.5W reverse wireless
  • Display: 6.9-inch OLED, 120 Hz refresh rate, 3500 nits peak brightness

The pricing of this phone reiterates its flagship status. The retail price starts at $1750 for the 17 Ultra, while the Leica-branded Leitzphone version goes for roughly $2,362.

The main difference between the normal 17 Ultra and the Leica branded version is the branding and aesthetics, which showcases more of Leica. They are basically the same in terms of processing power.

Is This Device for Nigerians?

The truth is, for most Nigerians, this device is unaffordable. Given the fact that it sells for over N2 million, which most people can not afford.

But for tech savvy Nigerians who are into photography and heavy content creation, this device justifies its expensive price tag by delivering excellent performance.

The phone comes with the same chipset as the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, which is yet to hit the market. This means that it can match the performance of high-performance devices from Samsung and Apple.

The Leica partnership adds extra credibility for photography enthusiasts and content creators who want the best image quality and professional shooting tools on a portable device.

In this year’s edition of MWC, which will last for 3 days (March 2nd to 5th), we expect more rollouts from global tech brands aside from Xiaomi and wilder phone concepts.
