Interswitch Group Partners Kenya’s Credit Bank, IFAD to Deepen Remittance Play

As part of sustained efforts to create solutions that enable individuals and communities prosper across the continent, Interswitch Group, Africa’s leading integrated payments and digital commerce company, has announced a partnership with Kenyan lender, Credit Bank, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Ria Money Transfer.

The partnership will facilitate the provision of diaspora cash remittance services to rural recipients in Kenya through the Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCOs).

Tagged the Affordable Remittances and Enhanced Financial Inclusion Programme, the initiative will enable unbanked rural remittance receivers to access formal banking services through a basic and transparent bank account and see Interswitch and its partners collaboratively train and build capacity for over 1,350 SACCO members.

Credit Bank projects that during the initial phase of the programme, it will reach at least 1,200 Kenyans living in the diaspora and facilitate at least 1,500 rural recipients back home to open a bank account for the first time.

Thus far, the initiative has onboarded three SACCOs that will be engaged in the next 16 months, with projections to onboard seven more over the next 36 months.

The SACCOs will have their staff appointed as sub-agents in the rural Kenyan areas which are currently underserved by formal remittance providers.

Speaking on the partnership, Mitchell Elegbe, Founder and General Managing Director of Interswitch Group, stated that the collaboration is indeed a significant stride towards bridging the financial divide, empowering more individuals and businesses in Kenya with access to modern payment solutions, and creating a more inclusive financial ecosystem for all.

“This partnership with Credit Bank of Kenya and IFAD marks an important step as we continue to expand our reach and provide innovative solutions for our customers worldwide. As we all know, remittance plays a crucial role in the lives of many people, and we are committed to making it simpler, faster, and more affordable” he added.

According to Romana Rajput, the Country General Manager of Interswitch Kenya,

SACCOs form an important part of our financial services in Kenya where we come together to save money and improve the quality of our lives through lower interest rates loans to acquire important purchases like land, homes, educate our children, improve our businesses and much more. Working with SACCOs and their members will make transfers quicker and more convenient for beneficiaries.”

Diaspora remittances have grown in recent years to become Kenya’s biggest source of foreign exchange, largely driven by a growing number of Kenyan immigrants to Western economies such as the US, UK and Canada, and also a growing Kenyan migrant labour force in the Middle East.

Diaspora remittances have an integral role in emerging economies like Kenya and with an estimated $4 billion sent back home each year, they present a crucial source for foreign exchange and capital flows into the Country, said Credit Bank CEO, Betty Korir, adding that “Initiatives like this will encourage Kenyans across the world to send money home while ensuring the largest possible portion of this money gets to rural recipients. The partnership will cut down the number of intermediaries to facilitate transfers directly to the last mile. We believe that we can take advantage of our wide SACCO networks within our rural communities to make remittances more accessible at the least cost.”

This collaboration which will deepen financial inclusion efforts in Kenya, highlights Interswitch’s vision of a continent where payments are a seamless part of everyday life as the tech giant continues to leverage strategic partnerships of this nature to drive convenient value-exchange across borders.

  • MTN Hits 5G Milestone, Deploys over 2500 Sites

MTN Hits 5G Milestone, Deploys over 2500 Sites

MTN has reached another milestone with regards its 5G technology deployment.

The leading Mobile network operator rolled out over 2 500 5G sites across the 19 markets in which it operates.

This was revealed when MTN, which is Africa’s biggest mobile network operator, this week released its integrated report for the year ended 31 December 2022.

MTN Nigeria started rolling out 5G services in August 2022 after winning spectrum in the auction held by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

“In the period, we rolled out 3 498 3G and 7 993 4G sites, culminating in our 3G and 4G coverage increasing by nine million and 45 million people, respectively,” says Ralph Mupita, MTN Group CEO, in the report.

“In 2022, we rolled out 1 570 5G sites, mainly in South Africa and Nigeria, bringing our total number of 5G sites to 2 527,” he adds.

“We are targeting 10% 5G population coverage by end-2023. The other spectrum winner is yet to launch its network.”

According to Mupita, MTN increased smartphone penetration to 58% of its customer base (up 3.8 percentage points), as it continued its push for greater digital and financial inclusion.

MTN GlobalConnect (MTN GC), which drives MTN’s FibreCo ambitions, continued to scale its fixed connectivity and wholesale mobility services, says Mupita.

“It rolled out 5 157km of new fibre in 2022, bringing our total inventory to more than 105 157km of proprietary fibre and comparing well with our 2025 target of 135 000km.”

Overall in 2022, Mupita says, MTN GC signed fixed external infrastructure deals valued at $90.8 million.

    MoMo Money Agent

“In our fintech business, active MoMo [Mobile Money] users rose by 21.4% to 69.1 million, while the volume of transactions processed through our platform grew by 33.9% year-on-year (YOY) to 13.4 billion. Although the pricing reductions in Côte d’Ivoire impacted overall service revenue growth, this has recovered in line with expectations, with a positive YOY trajectory in Q4.

“Importantly, we sustained the expansion of our fintech ecosystem, increasing active agents and merchants by 30.3% and 86%, respectively. This is critical to the medium- and long-term growth of our business; supporting increased activity, revenue and cash flow in fintech.

“We drove the momentum in our MoMo Payment Services Bank in Nigeria, following its launch in Q2 2022, even though the growth in active wallets was slowed by the temporary suspension of the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System interface in Q3.

“The interface was reopened as planned, starting with inbound transfers in December 2022 and the outbound phase completed post the year-end.”

From a commercial perspective, MTN implemented several price optimisation measures required to ensure the long-term sustainability of its business and the level of investment required to maintain the capacity and quality of networks.

“In this regard, we also accelerated our customer value management efforts and streamlined promotions and rationalised our offerings where necessary to help manage churn and optimise effective pricing,” the CEO says.

MTN reviewing tariffs in countries affected by hyper-inflation

“In hyperinflationary markets such as South Sudan and Sudan, price revisions are considered on an ongoing basis and we remain engaged with regulators in markets such as Nigeria, Uganda, Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau regarding market pricing.

“To manage challenges in our supply chain, we continued to employ the comprehensive risk mitigation strategies we have had in place for a number of years now. As part of this, we leveraged our scale and worked with partners for advance purchase orders to ensure sufficient coverage for critical spares for our networks and operations.

“We also accelerated initiatives for more local currency pricing for IT and network expenditure, as well as improvements in price books.”

  • Nestcoin spins off Metaverse Magna (MVM), Names Yemi Johnson as CEO

Nestcoin spins off Metaverse Magna (MVM), Names Yemi Johnson as CEO

Metaverse Magna (MVM) began as a Play to Earn gaming guild in the 2021 crypto bull market that saw Play 2 Earn (P2E) games dominate the landscape.

At its peak, MVM’s gaming guild had 1,200 scholars on play to earn games and brought in monthly revenues of ~$60K.

As the crypto market turned bearish, MVM adapted its business model to fix the inherent tokenomics problems that had wrecked the economies of many P2E games while also talking to its users to understand what they disliked about P2E games. The result was Hyper.

Hyper is a social gaming & eSports platform that allows gamers to play fun, casual games in both free and competitive matches, and make money. Gamers love the product because:

Hyper’s business model is sustainable and has produced unicorn-status startups in India, such as Dream11. Dream11 allows players stake against each other in fantasy cricket.

Yemi Johnson leads MVM as the CEO. He joined MVM as its General Manager after exiting Reliance as SVP, Consumer Business, and Hotels.ng as COO. During this period, he grew MVM to its highest revenue months and oversaw the business’s pivot.

    Yemi Johnson MVM CEO
    Yemi Johnson, CEO MVM

Yele Bademosi, founder and CEO of Nestcoin, will serve on Metaverse Magna’s board.

According to Yele Bademosi, “Nestcoin’s decision to spin out MVM showcases our dedication to promoting innovation and empowering emerging businesses that make crypto accessible. By giving MVM the autonomy to steer its own path, Nestcoin not only accelerates MVM’s progress, but also fuels the expansion of the entire web3 ecosystem.”

MVM still operates the gaming guild with little overhead and it is focused on Hyper which has users in Nigeria, Indonesia, and Brazil via a joint venture partnership with OFR (a VC fund) and DUX (A Brazilian gaming guild). MVM has 10 employees consisting of software engineers, designers, and business growth managers who all have a founding equity stake in MVM.

Hyper is still in its beta but has over 6,000 sign-ups with a 50% stickiness rate. Here’s how you can access Hyper.

Yemi Johnson had this to say about Hyper. “If Messi was born in the 1900s, he would never have made any money from football or be known for his talent. Fast forward 100 years later and Messi and many people earn a living from football.

This same dynamic happened in console and PC gaming with no one caring about the top pro players in core games like FIFA and Call of Duty, and now millions of people care and thousands of gamers make a living from these games via eSports.

Playing fun games on your mobile phone is work and people build skills in these games, so they deserve to be able to monetize their skills. Scholars from our gaming guild felt this way and wanted a solution that was long-term and sustainable, so we built Hyper to solve their problem. Mobile gaming is a billion-person activity and we’re innovating in a new era in social gaming.”

LAGOS: StarTimes Announces End of Life for DVB-T1 Decoder, Migrates Customers to DVB-2

StarTimes, a leading electronics and media company in Sub-Saharan Africa, has phased out its digital video broadcasting (DVB-T1) decoder for Lagos subscribers, TechEconomy can report.

But there is not cause for worry as the Company is migrating the subscribers to a more sophisticated technology, the digital terrestrial TV DVB-T2.

TechEconomy recalls that in 2010, StarTimes ushered in a new era of television viewing to millions of homes.

That marked a major departure from poor picture quality and limited entertainment on TV viewing.

And a new era of digital TV for everyone was born. Digital TV became easily accessible, affordable and families had more entertainment choices.

This technology was powered by digital video broadcasting (DVB-T1) decoder, a digital-terrestrial technology.

With the wide acceptance of StarTimes in various homes and in line with its mission centred on delivering top-notch digital benefits to homes, StarTimes launched the latest digital terrestrial TV DVB-T2 technology in 2012.

Speaking during a press conference at StarTimes office in Tejuosho Lagos on Thursday, April 27, 2023, Eric Xiao, General Manager, StarTimes Nigeria, emphasized the major advantage of the DVB-T2 is its ability to offer more channels and picture quality as one frequency on DVB-T2 has the capacity for more channels than DVB-T1.

    In his words:

“The DVB-T2 also has superior digital and audio-visual quality, making TV viewing more enjoyable for families. StarTimes has been using its DVB-T2 technology to support Nigeria’s digital migration switchover, in collaboration with the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, and the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA)

“StarTimes has the widest digital terrestrial television (DTT) coverage in Nigeria, reaching all 36 states and the FCT, due to its strategic partnership with NTA.

    StarTimes

“However, some subscribers are still using the old DVB-T1 decoder, which is now outdated. The time has come to retire the DVB-T1 technology for good.

Speaking further on the shutdown of the DVB-T1 technology and the migration of all customers to the DVB-T2 technology, Xiao said,0

“This switch-off starts in Lagos on May 1, meaning customers still using the old StarTimes decoder will stop receiving signals from May 1. When StarTimes launched in 2010, the T1 decoder was introduced as its initial decoder.

How to upgrade to new decorder – T2

On her part, Abosede Adewara, Assistant Marketing Director, StarTimes Nigeria said the station has invited all its Lagos subscribers to migrate to the T2 decoder for free.

“This upgrade aims to provide our esteemed subscribers with a better viewing experience.

“As a subscriber, if you are still using the T1 decoder (the silver colour set-top box decoder), we understand that you may be experiencing poor signal, unclear images, and limited channel options. However, with the new T2 decoder, you can say goodbye to these issues and enjoy the best of digital television.

“We are offering all our T1 decoder subscribers the opportunity to upgrade to the T2 decoder for free. To take advantage of this offer, visit our business halls or selected dealers, come along with your T1 decoder and remote, recharge for one month on classic bouquet, and swap instantly to the T2 decoder at no extra charge.

“We encourage you to act fast as the old StarTimes (silver colour) decoder will stop receiving signals from May 1”.

    Continuing, Xiao said:

“It is important to note that you must present your T1 decoder to get the T2 decoder. However, if you forget to come with your T1 remote, you can purchase the T2 remote for just N500.

“We understand that many of our subscribers fall into the average income bracket, and that is why we have made this upgrade available for free. We believe that every subscriber should be able to enjoy the best digital TV experience regardless of their income”.

Edustat Offers EdTech Stakeholders What SpaceX Engineers Found during Starship Rocket Launch

Elon Musk’s SpaceX’s Starship rocket — which could one day carry humans to the moon and Mars — made it some four minutes and 24 miles into the sky before it exploded during its inaugural test flight last Thursday.

And yet, even as they watched the world’s largest rocket burst into a fireball, SpaceX engineers still roared with cheers and applause.

Spacex employees watch during Starship Rocket launch
Spectators watch from South Padre Island, Texas, as the SpaceX Starship launches for a flight test from Starbase in Boca Chica, Texas, on April 20, 2023. – The Starship exploded during the first test flight of the spacecraft. The rocket successfully blasted off at 8:33 am Central Time (1333 GMT). The Starship capsule had been scheduled to separate from the first-stage rocket booster three minutes into the flight but separation failed to occur and the rocket blew up. (Photo by VERONICA G. CARDENAS / AFP) (Photo by VERONICA G. CARDENAS/AFP via Getty Images)

The launch was hailed as “a real accomplishment” and “so successful”.

    Why?

“With a test like this, success comes from what we learn, and today’s test will help us improve Starship’s reliability as SpaceX seeks to make life multi-planetary,” SpaceX later tweeted.

SpaceX said before the mission that “any data it yielded would be valuable as long as the rocket cleared the launch pad” — which it did.

This is where the lessons come from – SpaceX engineers went for the ‘data’, not necessarily for the Starship Rocket to hit the moon and/or Mars on the first launch. Now they have the data, expect them to be more accurate in the next launch!

    The Need for accurate data:

Data helps a company redefine its strategy, increase their revenue and profits by making the company more efficient, providing key insights into operations and customer satisfaction and helping to improve certain processes.

Data can help businesses measure whether certain actions, products or services are profitable and where their greatest expenses might be. Identifying expenses is often the key to increasing profits because businesses can reduce those expenses and keep more of the revenue they earn. Raw data helps the company identify where it can trim expenses, increase efforts and earn more revenue.

Again, that is why stakeholders in the education sector in Nigeria were full of praise for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and its technology partners, Sidmach Technologies, following the development of Edustat platform.

    Edustat for Education Statistics
    Edustat for Education Statistics

I tell you why: Data plays a critical role in problem-solving for company leaders. With an abundance of data, company leaders can identify and address key problems and monitor the effects of proposed solutions.

Solving problems can be much easier and solutions are more effective when the person solving that problem has sufficient information. Understanding the problem in its entirety is typically the first step toward solving that problem.

That is why the SpaceX team didn’t bury their heads in sand when the Spaceship Rocket ‘failed’. Are you in the EdTech space in Nigeria? Edustat presents you with a dataset to rave-up your products/services.

Edustat is a data and Artificial Intelligence-driven analytics platform that offers rich and unique smart statistical insights into education and assessment in West Africa using historical and current data to provide detailed intelligence for stakeholders across the globe in a smart and easily accessible manner. It offers a variety of rich, interactive educational assessment statistics, and insights, in graphs, summaries, tables, trends and interactive dashboards for intelligence, research, and informed decision-making in just a few clicks.

WAEC, in partnership with Sidmach, developed Edustat with ease of use in mind. So, it was built for users to easily sign up, and select the kind of report or intelligence they seek, with an array of filters to filter down the expected result by age, gender, demography, and even special needs amongst many other options of filters.

    Values Edustat offers users

Everyone can benefit from Edustat, but let’s highlight a few: Researchers/academics (PhD students, professorship, masters) – We all know it is usually difficult to access accurate data that cover education statistics in gender, disabilities, regions, male/female and other indexes. Researchers will have cause to smile because Edustat contains more than just statistical numbers; you are assured of infographics.

The team infused a summary of any insight or report you generate using Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools.

The opportunities are numerous. Governments at all levels – Federal, State, LGA; MDAs, are welcome to use Edustat.

For instance, the Ogun State Government wants to assess the state’s performance in SSCE over the years. They can compare their State with other States for developmental planning, and interventions (in case the students are not doing well in certain subjects like English, Mathematics, etc).

A State Government that pays WAEC fees its students would cherish having accurate data on their performances.

Funding Agencies – The World Bank, UNESCO, DFID, etc., who are looking for reliable data for interventions for scholarships, erect classrooms/ this will help for informed decisions.

Schools are not left out. Schools would want to know how they perform in WAEC; maybe for the bragging rights of 9As or other achievements. This will help them compare with other schools. They can track how their female students are performing; how the students (generally) are doing per subject; juxtapose their performance to others.

The team really worked hard to integrate AI Predictive Modelling, so schools shall be able to predict how students will perform in future high school assessments – known as WAEC school exams.

Also, Parents who moved to new locations do not know which School to pick for their kids. Worry not; you can assess schools’ performance in WAEC through Edustat.

Private Corporate/Individuals – Any company that does anything on Education like Edcent, uLesson, Edusko, will help them build, and scale up their products, contents, or solutions around subjects.

They can ascertain how candidates perform in each subject in real time.

It is a web-based application for now, but it can be assessed from any device, Laptop, Phone, Tablet etc. It is adaptive to any device and provides everyone with the same experience across all devices.

Edustat offers Pay Per Report. What that means is that you only need to pay for the insight/report you are seeking per time.

    Edustat
Some of the available data on Edustat

But again, with the ease of use in mind, the team built the product with a wallet system which allows users to fund their wallets with sufficient funds which allows them to pay for the statistics/reports/insights they seek by drawing funds from their funded wallet automatically.

So, what are you waiting for, sign up on Edustat (https://waec.edustat.ng/) today!

Infobip Reminds Businesses Why RCS is the Next Big Digital Channel

Infobip, a global cloud communication company that helps businesses implement an innovative WhatsApp conversational chatbot solution to better connect with their customers, has again businesses to harness the potentials of Rich Communication Services (RCS).

Experts at Infobip made this call during a media parley in Lagos this week.

    Source: Infobip

Leading the team, Olatayo Ladipo-Ajai, regional manager at Infobip Nigeria, said that Nigerians, particularly businesses, such as banks, telecommunication companies and other businesses should harness the benefits posed by the RCS to improve their customer experience and reach more customers.

He described Rich Communication Service (RCS) as a mobile messaging protocol that can delivers more interactive mobile text messaging experience than traditional plain-text SMS messages.

He noted that Conversational messaging, in the form of RCS, will enable businesses and brands to communicate more effectively while reaching out, attracting and converting potential customers.

According to him, “RCS is an evolution of SMS, which integrates features from various chat apps into one platform.

“The platform allows the exchange of group chats, PDFs, video, audio and high-resolution images, as well as read receipts and real-time viewing, providing more value than traditional SMS.

“One of its key benefits is that RCS sits on top of the SMS platform, which means it has the same reach and is thus also native on most smartphones”.

    Infobip

On his part, Martin Effiong, Senior Operator Partnership Manager, West Africa, at Infobip, said RCS’s rich media capabilities can provide a foothold for MNOs not only in business communication space but also in the P2P market where OTT players currently dominate.

RCS provides a solution for MNOs to compete with OTT players and claw back some of the revenue they have been missing out on in both the P2P and the lucrative Application-To-Person (A2P) messaging space.

    – Effiong

He further described RCS as a rich media capable communication protocol that is an evolution of SMS as a native messaging channel.

“With RCS, mobile operators are able to provide their subscribers, as well as enterprises, with a messaging system that has the capability of sharing and receiving content such as images or videos without the need to download a separate messaging app.

“With many enterprise-focused features such as chatbots or carousels (content slideshows), brands are able to provide a convenient customer engagement channel for various use cases, ranging from tech support to purchases, as part of the conversational commerce paradigm,” he said.

L-r: Martin Effiong, Senior Operator Partnership Manager, West Africa, at Infobip, Olatayo Ladipo-Ajai, regional manager at Infobip Nigeria and Isaac Akanni during a media roundtable organized by Infobip Nigeria at the Federal Palace Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Also speaking, Isaac Akanni, on “Boosting profitability and enhancing deeper customer engagement with conversational banking”, said that RCS is integral to conversational banking which can be seen as an upgraded version of SMS, complete with the rich features of a chat app.

The Rich features include images, videos, and audio files that can be seen in RCS messages and that provide a more engaging and personalised experience for customers.

    – Akanni

“It also offers a wide range of features that can improve Customer experience (CX), including interactive functionality that enables customers to make bill payments or balance enquiries, while providing privacy and security through end-to-end encryption.

“The main value of incorporating an RCS channel is that it yields better customer engagement, increases trust and builds long-term customer relationships.

“By sending RCS messages, banks can ensure that customers gain higher visibility of their brand, while also presenting new offers and campaigns in a more effective way, such as information about loans, changing interest rates or new credit cards.

“Banks can also use RCS to send notifications or useful reminders about card activations or payment instructions.

“While RCS is new to the local market, the opportunities it presents are huge and use cases will grow exponentially as the channel gains traction.

“Conversational banking should ultimately provide a seamless flow of conversation to ensure positive CX and manage a host of complex transactions that will lead to a deeply rooted engagement that translates into a long-term relationship between a bank and its customers”.

How female SMBs leverage WhatsApp Business App to Increase Sales

In this digital innovation piece, we will tell you how female Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) leverage the WhatsApp Business App to streamline operations, reach new customers, and increase sales.

Female Small and Medium Businesses (SMBs) in Nigeria are significant contributors to the country’s micro-business sector, with many of them relying on the WhatsApp Business App as their primary business platform.

For these women, the private messaging app serves as their website, storefront, and livelihood. Here are two female SMBs who are using the WhatsApp Business App to establish secure connections with their customers, drive sales and promote their businesses’ growth.

Temitope Bukola, the founder of Giftbysisi, a gifting company, started using the WhatsApp Business app when it launched in 2018. Her passion for creating inspired her to start a cushion (throw pillow) production.

The entire business transitioned into a full-blown gifting company. As an SMB passionate about her business growth, Temitope sends relevant broadcast messages to customers informing them of upcoming sales. She has leveraged WhatsApp as the top communication channel for business transactions and built her brand as inclusive and resilient.

Using the features of WhatsApp Business like catalogue, quick replies, cart, broadcast, and others, Temitope has leveraged them to track her customers, deliver quality products and maintain customers’ trust.

Despite the challenges faced as an SMB, which includes lack of funding, and the difficulties surrounding recruiting staff with integrity, she has been able to carve a niche for herself by building and sustaining a gifting brand.

Oyeleke Oluwalana, Owner of Supertouch Exquisite Design (STED) Accessories, was a graduate of Chemistry.

Her love for accessories made her start the business as an undergraduate in 2017. To bridge the awareness gap, she started using WhatsApp to showcase her products on her Status and gradually attracted customers who loved accessories.

Her accessories line includes fascinators, turbans & Zara caps, tiaras and headbands, flower/lapel/brooch and bridal accessories.

Starting the business as a science student was challenging because she had to combine studies and business. However, she was able to leverage WhatsApp to get across to her suppliers and customers.

Oluwalana has used WhatsApp to teach free and paid online training sessions for Nigerians and non-Nigerians, who want to learn about fashion accessories.

She has shown them the benefits of starting a business in it, and for every paid training, there is a business class where vital topics such as pricing strategy, among others, are taught.

At the moment, STED Accessories has trained over 80 students via WhatsApp on how to make certain accessories since 2017.

Female SMBs are playing a critical role in the economic development of Nigeria, with many of them relying on innovative solutions like the WhatsApp Business App to break barriers to business growth.

Despite facing various challenges, such as limited access to finance, education, and technology, female entrepreneurs in Nigeria are demonstrating their resilience and resourcefulness by harnessing the power of digital tools to create and expand their businesses.

As more women enter the SMB space and utilise technology to their advantage, there is no doubt that they will continue to drive economic growth and social change in Nigeria and beyond.

    World Slimmest laptop

ASUS has announced the exciting new Zenbook S 13 OLED (UX5304), the world’s slimmest 13.3-inch OLED laptop.

It’s also the most eco-friendly Zenbook ever, and takes the brand’s signature qualities of ultraportable design, sustainability and on-the-go performance to a new level, proving conclusively that less can be more.

With a world-beating super-slim 1 cm profile and a super-light 1 kg chassis, the sophisticated Zenbook S 13 OLED delivers no-compromise performance, connectivity and battery life, making it the epitome of ultraportable design, and finished in brand-new Basalt Gray or classic Ponder Blue.

It’s also designed with the environment and carbon neutrality firmly in mind, using recycled metals and plastics in its construction, FSC Mix-certified packaging, an elegant new eco-friendly plasma ceramic aluminum for the Basalt Gray model, and halogen-free electronics, to make this the most eco-friendly Zenbook model we’ve ever produced.

The Zenbook series excels at delivering unrivaled on-the-go performance, and Zenbook S 13 OLED is no exception, harnessing the power of up to 13th Gen Intel Core i7 processors with 32 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD. There’s a full set of I/O ports for on-the-go connections, and a long-lasting 63 Wh battery.

For immersive true-to-life visuals, Zenbook S 13 OLED has a gorgeous 16:10 2.8K (2880 x 1800) ASUS Lumina OLED display that’s Dolby Vision certified, with Pantone Validated color rendering and VESA DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification, ensuring incredible detail and the deepest black levels.

    Super-slim and super-light

    Asus Zenbook 13

To achieve the super-slim 1 cm profile and super-light 1 kg weight of Zenbook S 13 OLED, several advanced techniques and materials are used in its design and construction to reduce the weight and dimensions compared to the previous generation, without compromising performance, connectivity or battery life.

    • : To achieve the incredibly slim profile, Asus embedded a thinner yet fully featured FHD IR camera directly into the CNC-machined lid. Asus also used a specially designed ultraslim OLED panel, resulting in a lid that’s 30% slimmer.
    • : By using precision CNC machining, we make more space available in the interior for components. The designers used circuit boards with fewer layers and a higher wiring density, with many more transistors, giving better performance with less weight in a more compact space.

The motherboard is precision-engineered to house an additional, ultrathin fan that increases airflow for better cooling. This makes the lower part of the laptop about 25% slimmer.

    Source: Asus

The result is a class-defining ultraportable laptop that takes thin and light to a whole new level without compromises: it supports up to 14 hours of video streaming, while offering improved cooling and performance compared to its predecessor.

And despite its world-beating compact dimensions, Zenbook S 13 OLED retains full usability and features a comprehensive set of standard I/O ports.

    All-round sustainability

ASUS has really demonstrated its commitment to do more with less through Zenbook. This device is an EPEAT Gold registered product that has a positive environmental across the entire product lifecycle, from material use and manufacturing, through to assembly, use, and end of life.

They have mitigated its carbon footprint by incorporating recycled materials and designing more eco-conscious packaging.

The device is the most eco-friendly Zenbook ever made, incorporating post-industrial recycled (PIR) magnesium-aluminum alloy in the keyboard cover, chassis and lid, reducing its carbon footprint by more than 50%.

The keycaps and speakers incorporate post-consumer-recycled (PCR) plastics, and the speakers also use ocean-bound plastics.

“We have redesigned the packaging to be 100% recyclable, with reusable and compostable materials. It uses 100% FSC Mix-certified paper from responsibly managed forests, controlled wood and recycled sources. The paper packing inserts can also be easily transformed into useful laptop stands1”, Asusu.

In addition, Zenbook S 13 OLED also exceeds the ENERGY STAR energy efficiency standard by 43% to reduce the electricity consumption. Via above mentioned sustainable actions, the overarching goal of this device’s sustainability initiatives is to achieve carbon neutrality.

    Asus Zenbook 13
    Source: Asus

For the first time, Asus has used a special manufacturing process to create an exclusive plasma ceramic aluminum material for the lid.

This process uses pure water and electricity, and no organic compounds, strong acids, or heavy metals are required. Instead, this low-environmental-impact bath-based method produces a physical and chemical transformation of the aluminum.

This results in increased wear resistance, corrosion protection, thermal management, hardness, and lifespan.

Along with the physical advantages, the look and feel of this material is similar to natural stone that resonates with the spirit of the Zenbook series. Incredibly, this makes each lid individually unique. No two are alike.

A longer laptop lifespan also reduces long-term waste, so Zenbook 13 S OLED is stringently tested using the latest MIL-STD-810H US military-grade durability standard, with up to 12 test methods and 26 individual tests— the world’s most strictly tested laptop durability.

    Performance on the go

The Intel Evo-certified Zenbook S 13 OLED delivers the perfect blend of performance and portability, featuring up to a 13th Gen Intel Core i7 processor that can be boosted by 20% to a thermal design power (TDP) of up to 20 watts.

This is supported by up to 32 GB of LPDDR5 RAM and an ultrafast 1 TB PCIe 4.0 x4 SSD, with a long-lasting high-capacity 63 Wh battery. WiFi 6E enhanced with ASUS WiFi Master Premium ensures fast, stable connections.

Even though it’s ultra-compact, Zenbook S 13 OLED includes a full complement of I/O ports, so users don’t need to carry dongles or adapters on their travels. The two ultrafast Thunderbolt 4 USB-C ports support fast charging, 4K external displays, and up to 40 Gbps data transfers, and there’s also a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-A port, an HDMI 2.1 port, and a 3.5 mm audio jack.

For enhanced video conferencing experiences on the go, the FHD IR camera includes AI-powered visual effects and AI noise-cancelation technology.

It also supports fast and secure face login with Windows Hello. The powerful Harman Kardon-certified audio system with immersive Dolby Atmos sound has a smart amplifier combined with ASUS Audio Booster technology to boost volume by up to 5.25X.

The 9.5%-larger ASUS ErgoSense touchpad allows easier navigation and is smooth, comfortable, and responsive, with an easy-to-clean anti-fingerprint coating.

ASUS Lumina OLED display: More accurate. More adaptive. More reliable

For an immersive viewing experience, Zenbook S 13 OLED is equipped with a 16:10 ASUS Lumina OLED display — our brand-new name that’s only given to superior OLED displays that meet our strict quality criteria, and offer a visual experience that’s more accurate, more adaptive, and more reliable. ASUS Lumina OLED displays standardize highly-crafted visual solutions around the best OLED experience.

As well as offering Dolby Vision certification, the display is also DisplayHDR True Black 500-certified for brilliant whites and the deepest blacks, and carries the Pantone Validated badge for industry-standard color fidelity.

The display is also certified for eye care by TÜV Rheinland and SGS with 70%-lower blue-light emissions, ensuring that the user’s eyes are comfortable for even during long viewing sessions.
