Questions about network reliability and the future of Nigeria’s creator economy came to the fore during recent MTN Nigeria’s Data on Trial event, where popular content creator and streamer Jarvis Jadrolita (name: Amadou Elizabeth Aminata) challenged telecommunications operators on the quality of connectivity available to users.

“Are there places where there is no breakage when streaming IRL?” she asked, drawing attention to the realities faced by creators whose livelihoods increasingly depend on stable internet connections.

The question highlighted a growing concern among Nigeria’s rapidly expanding community of content creators, who rely on uninterrupted connectivity for live streaming, content uploads, and real-time audience engagement.

As digital content creation continues to evolve into a major economic activity, network quality has become more than a convenience. For many creators, it is a critical business requirement that directly impacts their ability to reach audiences and generate income.

Jarvis’ question sparked a broader discussion on network performance and the increasing demands being placed on telecommunications infrastructure by a data-hungry population.

Responding to the question, Yahaya Ibrahim, MTN Nigeria’s chief technical officer, explained that network performance can vary depending on factors such as location, coverage, device capability, and the number of users connected to a particular site at any given time.

In an earlier session, Michael Ndukwe, General Manager, Network Performance & Quality Assurance at MTN Nigeria, took participants through the evolution of mobile radio access technology in Nigeria, tracing the country’s journey from 1G networks to the current 5G era.

According to him, each technological advancement has significantly increased network capacity and enabled new forms of digital engagement.

Ndukwe also cited statistics from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), noting that data consumption reached approximately 13.2 million terabytes in 2025.

In the first quarter of 2026 alone, Nigerians had already consumed about 4.06 million terabytes of data, reflecting the country’s growing dependence on digital services.

He attributed the increase to the adoption of 4G and 5G technologies, rising smartphone penetration, the proliferation of smart devices, and the continued growth of social media usage across the country.

The exchange underscored a broader shift in consumer expectations. As more Nigerians build businesses, careers, and communities online, access to fast and reliable connectivity is becoming increasingly important.
