In celebration of World Food Day 2024, Glovo, a pioneering multi-category app, reaffirms its commitment to advancing food security and promoting sustainable urban delivery solutions across Nigeria.

This year’s theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” aligns with Glovo’s ongoing efforts to address critical challenges such as food insecurity, environmental sustainability, and community empowerment.

Delivering Impact: Over 2,500 Social Meals in Nigeria

As part of its mission to support food security, Glovo has delivered more than 2,500 social meals across Nigeria through its Glovo Access initiative. This program, which offers free delivery services for NGOs, ensures that meals and essential food items reach those in need by leveraging Glovo’s technology for swift and efficient distribution.

“Glovo is committed to leveraging its technology and partnerships to make measurable strides in reducing food waste and delivering meals to vulnerable communities,” said Lamide Akinola, general manager for Glovo Nigeria. “Our goal is to be a driving force in creating a sustainable and equitable food system, and World Food Day is a powerful reminder of the work that still needs to be done.”

Driving Sustainable Food Delivery for a Healthier Nigeria

At Glovo, sustainability is not a goal, it shapes the way we operate, particularly in how we approach urban mobility and food delivery.

In partnership with Siltech, Glovo has introduced electric bikes (e-bikes) into its fleet specifically for food deliveries, reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality.

These e-bikes have already covered over 22,000 kilometers, delivering nearly 6,000 orders. This initiative brings Glovo closer to its goal of having 64% of orders delivered by non-combustion vehicles by 2030.

“By integrating electric vehicles into our food delivery ecosystem, we are not only reducing emissions but also contributing to healthier urban environments,” said Daphne Kabeberi, Impact and Sustainability lead Africa. “Cleaner air and quieter streets improve the quality of life in our cities, which in turn positively affects public health. This reflects our broader commitment to a greener, more sustainable future for Nigeria.”

A Call to Action on World Food Day

On this World Food Day, Glovo calls on businesses, governments, and citizens to take decisive action in addressing food insecurity and promoting sustainable development.

Through the right partnerships and innovation, we can ensure that nutritious food is accessible to everyone, whilst creating cleaner, more livable urban environments.
