Microsoft Releases Emergency Windows 11 Update KB5121767 to Fix Dell PC Bug

Microsoft Clarifies Recall Feature Removal Option in Latest Windows 11 Update Was a Mistake | Update

Windows 11

Microsoft has released an emergency update for Windows 11 that replaces last week’s July cumulative update after mounting performance complaints from users.

Last week, Microsoft rolled out the mandatory KB5101650 update for Windows 11. It included one of the biggest security patch bundles in Windows history, along with the new option to extend the update cycle, a feature that made headlines last week.

Almost immediately after users installed the patch, some Dell PC owners began reporting performance issues. As complaints continued to grow online, Microsoft officially acknowledged the bug and quickly released a replacement update, KB5121767, for affected Windows 11 systems.

The complaints and affected PCs

The out-of-band (OOB) emergency update was released to address critical bugs that were causing unexpected shutdowns, overheating, battery drain and performance slowdowns. Most of the complaints came from Dell PC users, so if you are not using a Dell PC, you are unlikely to need the replacement update.

Microsoft has now blocked the previous July cumulative update from installing on many affected Dell PCs. However, although the new patch is primarily intended for Dell systems, some non-Dell PCs are also downloading it if the “Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available” option is enabled in Windows Update.

Fortunately, it does not cause any issues on unaffected systems. It simply installs a fix for a problem those PCs do not have.

The performance issues were traced to a compatibility problem between the new USB-C Connection Manager interface and Intel’s Innovation Platform Framework (IPF) driver. Because the IPF driver manages thermal performance, fan behaviour and power consumption, the conflict disrupted the normal operation of these system functions.

The latest update reinforces the case for waiting a short time before installing newly released Windows updates, allowing early issues to surface before wider adoption. Microsoft recently introduced more flexibility for users who prefer to delay new updates, and this incident shows why that option can be useful.

Microsoft’s quick response has provided relief for affected users, particularly Dell PC owners who experienced the performance problems after installing the July update.
